David Corenswet revealed he experienced some creative disagreements with director James Gunn while filming Superman. However, Corenswet believes this kind of tension is a normal and even helpful part of making a movie.
After the superhero movie came out in July, the writer and director, James Gunn, posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing him and actor David Corenswet talking about what a specific scene was meant to convey.
Honestly, James deserves all the credit for even responding to me! I wasn’t exactly the easiest person to talk to, but he stuck with it. And James also mentioned that throughout everything, there was zero drama – no one got upset or let their ego get in the way.

During an interview with Jonathan Bailey for Variety’s Actors on Actors, David Corenswet revisited the topic of James Gunn, agreeing with Bailey that a certain level of tension—but not conflict—is healthy and necessary when making a movie.
Corenswet explained, ‘I really appreciate how we achieved tension without resorting to conflict, because unnecessary conflict just adds complications.’ He added that he was glad that moment made it into the film and was curious to hear what audiences thought of it.

I constantly encountered everything from resignation – like accepting ‘that’s just how things are’ – to strong complaints about a really bad work atmosphere. It was incredible how tirelessly James worked despite it all.
He rarely seemed annoyed with me, likely because he understood I was sharing my thoughts because I believed I might have a different perspective or insight that he hadn’t considered.
Honestly, the worst thing a director could say to me is, ‘Okay, if you really want to do it, go ahead.’ It’s not about me just getting my way, you know? I’m hoping I can bring something to the table that everyone likes, so it feels like a collaborative effort. I’ve been lucky enough to work on some cool projects like Pearl and Twisters, and that’s always what I aim for – making something we’re all proud of.

After the huge success of Superman, which earned over $600 million in theaters, DC Studios quickly approved a sequel. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are set to return as their characters in Man of Tomorrow.
Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor, has revealed that filming for the next movie will start in April 2026. He added that while he can’t share many details, “it’s awesome” and includes “some really fun stuff.”
