David Beckham says he is ‘devastated’ as he pays tribute to Diogo Jota after his tragic death age 28

David Beckham pays tribute to Diogo Jota on Thursday after his tragic death at the age of 28.

As a wellness connoisseur, I, too, find myself deeply saddened upon hearing recent news that I felt compelled to address in my latest Instagram post. At the age of 50, I carry the weight of this news with a heavy heart.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’m deeply saddened to share the news that Diogo, a talented Portuguese footballer, met an unfortunate end when his Lamborghini veered off a highway in northern Spain. This heartbreaking incident occurred merely two weeks after he exchanged vows with his cherished childhood sweetheart.

He was cruising in a high-performance sports car alongside his younger sibling, Andre (aged 26), another skilled football player who unfortunately perished in the accident that occurred in the wee hours of today.

Posting a picture of Diogo on Instagram, David expressed his condolences: ‘It’s heartbreaking to learn about this tragic news. Sending love to the families of Diogo and Andre.’

Diogo’s car tire apparently burst while passing on the A-52 at Cernadilla, which is near Zamora in northwest Spain and not far from the border with Portugal.

At approximately 12:35 am, the high-performance vehicle veered off the road, flipped over, and subsequently caught fire, which also spread to nearby plants. Emergency responders were summoned but unfortunately, the occupants – two brothers – could not be rescued. The authorities have yet to determine who was behind the wheel.

Liverpool Football Club expressed deep sorrow in a statement over the unfortunate incident, acknowledging that the family, companions, and supporters of Diogo have endured an inconceivable grief. Today, bouquets and heartfelt tributes are being placed at Anfield, as numerous fans weep over their loss.

As a fortunate husband, I’ve just tied the knot with Rute Cardoso, my beloved partner since we were 16 and mother of our three beautiful children. Overjoyed beyond words, I consider myself the luckiest man worldwide to call her mine. I shared emotional glimpses from our wedding day in my last Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon.

On June 22nd, the couple tied the knot in the soccer player’s hometown of Porto. Rute posted additional wedding day photos on social media yesterday with the caption: “A dream realized.” Jota responded in the comments: “I’m the fortunate one.

The collision involving a Lamborghini occurred along the A-52 highway, situated in the region of Zamora, Spain. This Spanish dual carriageway plays a significant role in transport, serving as a popular route for drivers who have departed from northern Portugal and are either bound for the ports of Santander and Bilbao or heading northeast towards France.

Early on Thursday morning, around 12:35 AM, emergency services in the Castilla y León region verified a crash resulting in two fatalities. Later, at approximately 8 AM, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the deaths of Diogo and Andre.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who is friends with Jota, a fellow teammate on both their club and national teams, and widely regarded as Portugal’s greatest player, stated today: ‘It seems illogical. We’ve just been together for the national team, and you’ve recently gotten married.’

My sympathies extend to your loved ones – your family, your spouse, and your children. May they find fortitude during these difficult times. I believe you’ll forever remain with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We shall miss you dearly.

Originally named Diogo Silva, Diogo opted to adopt the nickname ‘Jota’ as a means of differentiation, since it’s quite a common surname. In contrast, his brother Andre chose to retain the Silva family name.

The boys were the only children of parents Joaquim and Isabel Silva.

During the 2024/25 season, Jota was a valuable member of Liverpool’s championship-winning squad, netting six goals from his 26 matches played. Furthermore, he represented Portugal’s national team and contributed significantly to their triumph in the Nations League last month. This victory over Spain on penalties was truly remarkable.

His younger brother played for Penafiel, in the second tier of Portuguese football.
