Dave Filoni’s 10/10 Star Wars Show Keeps Getting Better

Dave Filoni’s four-episode Star Wars series is consistently improving, and it’s based on the animated show Star Wars Rebels. Filoni developed Rebels after working on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, collaborating with Simon Kinberg and Carrie Beck to bring the story to life.

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been really captivated by this show. It reminds me a lot of Andor, which many consider the best Star Wars TV series out there. Like Andor, it delves into how the Rebel Alliance first started. We follow Phoenix Squadron – a really mismatched bunch of rebels who end up becoming like a family as they try to survive and make a difference in a galaxy that’s constantly shifting politically.

From the moment it premiered and throughout its four seasons, Star Wars Rebels was highly praised by critics. However, what truly makes it a standout show is its consistent improvement, cementing its status as a masterpiece.

Star Wars Rebels Has Aged Better Than The Clone Wars

Fans often debate whether Star Wars Rebels or Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the better animated series in the Star Wars franchise. While both shows are good and share similarities, Rebels might actually hold up better over time. One reason for this is how The Clone Wars told its stories – its specific narrative structure hasn’t aged as well.

The Clone Wars series wasn’t a single, continuous story. Instead, it was broken up into different story arcs, each focusing on various characters, planets, and battles within the Clone Wars. This approach led to some truly outstanding episodes—many are considered among the best Star Wars stories ever told—but it also meant that not every episode was a success, and some were quite weak.

Unlike The Clone Wars, Rebels tells a focused story with the same characters throughout its four seasons. This consistency makes each episode engaging, and while not every episode is a hit, Rebels generally avoids the really weak storylines that The Clone Wars sometimes had. In fact, many fans believe Rebels reaches even greater heights in its best episodes.

Why Star Wars Rebels Remains Relevant 8 Years Later

The enduring quality of Rebels is clear because it still feels fresh eight years after it ended. Characters first introduced in Rebels have gone on to play significant parts in The Mandalorian and, more recently, in the 2023 series Ahsoka. This trend will continue with season two of Ahsoka, coming to Disney+ in 2026, further solidifying Rebels‘ lasting impact on the Star Wars universe.

The animated series brought us characters like Ezra Bridger, Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Grand Admiral Thrawn, who will all be important in the upcoming second season of Ahsoka and future stories set in the New Republic era. Ahsoka herself first appeared in The Clone Wars and then Rebels, highlighting her continued significance to the Star Wars universe, and especially in what’s coming in 2026.

Star Wars Rebels Deserves An Animated Sequel

Given how well Star Wars Rebels holds up today, it really deserves a follow-up in animated form. Seeing the characters return in live-action with Ahsoka was great, but it felt a little odd seeing them in a different style and with new actors. Luckily, Star Wars is a franchise that can adapt, so an animated sequel is definitely a possibility.

More animated stories featuring these characters could be created alongside Ahsoka season 2, letting one of the best Star Wars shows continue its strong start. This would be especially welcome for fans who believe Star Wars Rebels is a show that consistently improves.
