Dave Filoni says Ahsoka season 2 is happening, and Grogu is coming to the big screen

As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with a lifelong obsession and countless hours logged in this galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Dave Filoni is the Yoda we never knew we needed. His unwavering dedication to the Star Wars universe has been nothing short of miraculous, and his latest projects have breathed new life into a fandom that was starting to feel a bit stale.

When Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, aimed to regain trust from the passionate Star Wars fanbase who had certain expectations, she looked towards one person – Dave Filoni. Currently serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, Filoni is a Star Wars expert, guiding us through these unexplored waters in a galaxy devoid of a Skywalker leading the way.

As the chosen one by George Lucas himself to shape Lucasfilm Animation, I’ve been a vital part of Star Wars’ enduring saga. That’s why everyone’s ears perk up when they see me at the red carpet event for Star Wars: Skeleton Wars, eager to catch my thoughts on the premiere.

And he didn’t disappoint with his news about Ahsoka Tano’s saga in the universe.

No Disturbance in the Force Here

For Star Wars enthusiasts, Ahsoka stirred up excitement and apprehension, a feeling not felt in quite a while. Characters like Tano (played by Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson), Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto, who bears the middle name as a tribute to martial arts royalty), and the unparalleled Grand Admiral Thrawn (portrayed by Lars Mikkelsen) captivated us with their intriguing real-life portrayals.

Season 1 served as a jolt to the lethargy that had enveloped many fans after shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett. Even Andor didn’t garner the acclaim it deserved. But hey, with Thrawn, we’re definitely on the right track!

Returning to the “Skeleton Crew” premiere, Extra interviewed Filoni and addressed questions that many of us had been wondering about. His assured responses, while not giving away too much detail, kept us excited for what appears to be a thrilling journey ahead. Importantly, he confirmed that it is indeed moving forward as planned.

I’m deeply involved with it too. I’ve penned it single-handedly so far and find joy in the process, but let me tell you, it’s been a tough task at times, particularly when shaping some of the story arcs. Ensuring everything unfolds in a thrilling manner for fans is another challenge.

Filoni shared, “I understand they’re curious about the places some of my Season 1 creations originated from. I’m quite pleased by this. I look forward to collaborating with Rosario [Dawson] again soon.

Apart from Ahsoka, he’s also busy with other Star Wars projects. He managed to share some news about The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to hit theatres in 2026.

Filoni expresses his enthusiasm too. He and Jon [Favreau] enjoyed their collaboration on that project, just as they usually do. It was delightful to witness Grogu again, he added. Grogu has grown into such a popular figure, and it’s fascinating to see how far puppetry has come compared to Season 1, especially considering the advancements made today in film production while working with the team. Filoni had a substantial role in collaborating with them on the puppetry.

Where Does Dave Filoni Go from Here?

Dave Filoni has confirmed he is the sole writer for Ahsoka Season 2. He is also the overseer of what will be a box-office smash in 2026 with The Mandalorian and Grogu. He is also in pre-production for a wildly-rumored project related to the New Republic Era following the fall of the Empire.

We’re on the brink of an “Inheritor of the Empire” and preparing to face off against “Operation Necromancer.” For those who aren’t up-to-date with their ancient language, it seems related to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and bringing back Emperor Palpatine. Regardless of your feelings about that, Filoni recognizes the importance of linking the cosmic events to create a captivating and satisfying narrative.

In the upcoming days, on April 18th, 2025, at Makuhari Messe in Japan, we can expect another Atomic Bomb-like impact on the future of the Empire. This is because Star Wars Celebration, which has never disappointed us, promises to be extraordinary with Dave Filoni taking charge of the event.
