Dave Chappelle Reveals Censored SNL Monologue Topics: Transgender People and Gaza

In his recent stand-up act, Dave Chappelle disclosed that the famous monologue he delivered on Saturday Night Live in January underwent some form of editing or alteration.

During a show in San Francisco on Thursday, the comedian, known for stirring up controversy due to his transphobic comments, mentioned that the management at Studio 8-H had advised him to avoid discussing two particular subjects for his most recent Saturday Night Live performance.

According to SFGATE’s senior culture editor Dan Gentile, the producers of SNL informed him that he was not allowed to discuss two specific subjects: transgender individuals and the situation in Gaza.

Even with the limitations, Chappelle found a moment to express compassion for Palestinians in his performance.

In his show in San Francisco, Chappelle chose not to delve deeper into the topic of Gaza, instead concluding his act with a pointed, thought-provoking statement: “Let’s show some understanding towards the Jews, let’s liberate Palestine,” as reported by the outlet.

On this occasion, it’s not the first time Saturday Night Live (SNL) has meddled with Dave Chappelle’s content. Back in 2022, Lorne Michaels actually vetoed a joke from one of his performances.

At the time, the comedian was facing heavy backlash over his jokes about transgender people.

Michael, hoping to steer clear of more debate, advised Chappelle not to make that joke, an advice which it seems Chappelle found hard to resist. (Or) Recognizing the need to avoid additional controversy, Michael cautioned Chappelle against telling that joke, a warning Chappelle apparently couldn’t ignore.

He ended up not airing it, after doing so during a dress rehearsal.

The specifics and context of the joke were laid bare by Vulture.

After an article by Page Six mistakenly claimed that several writers were boycotting his appearance due to a joke, Chappelle remarked, “It seems they got it mixed up.

In reality, a writer who was nonbinary privately told Michaels they preferred to sit the week out.

This setup the stage for an unexpected joke that not everyone had heard before. The confusion occurred because the person who had an issue was singular, but the document mixed up its gender pronouns since this individual was referred to as ‘they’.

In his January performance, Chappelle humorously expressed his desire to move away from controversy and start fresh. Towards the end of his act on the NBC program, he commented on Trump, stating: “He’s made it; he will be our 47th president, another victory for him.

20 years back, when I was in the Middle East, the stand-up comic shared a story about former President Jimmy Carter traveling to Palestine with very little protection, much like he did during his visit.

I will always remember the powerful image of an ex-U.S. president strolling among thousands of Palestinians who were cheering him on, with no security. Seeing that photo moved me to tears. I may not know if he was a good president, but in that moment, I believe he showed himself to be a truly great man. It filled me with immense pride.

Later on, he remarked, “The office of the presidency isn’t meant for small-minded individuals,” as he humorously referenced both Trump and the entire nation, implying that they are all viewers of this political spectacle.

To Trump and America, Chappelle expressed: “Bear in mind, regardless of who cast their vote for you, they all have faith in you. Regardless of whether they admire you or not, they all rely on you. The entire world relies on you.

What I’m trying to convey is that I hope you understand my point, and I wish you success in your future endeavors. I also encourage everyone, including myself, to improve next time.
