Dave Bautista’s Sci-Fi Action Movie Finds Redemption On Prime After Less Than $1M Box Office Haul

Dave Bautista lands a 2026 win with a 2025 film on Prime Video.

Despite a disappointing theatrical run when it came out on September 19, 2025, the sci-fi action film Afterburn is now finding success thanks to Prime Video. According to FlixPatrol, the movie is currently the most popular title on the streaming service in several countries, including Salvador, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Argentina, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Guatemala, Panama, and Paraguay.

Starring Dave Bautista as Jake, the movie Afterburn is currently popular on Prime Video, ranking at number two in Ecuador, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and number four in Denmark. J.J. Perry directed the film, which was written by Matt Johnson and Nimród Antal.

I recently learned that Afterburn, while not part of the big DC or Marvel worlds, actually comes from a graphic novel! It’s based on a Red 5 Comics series of the same name, created by Scott Chitwood, Paul Ens, and Wayne Nichols. And it’s cool to see some familiar faces – Dave Bautista isn’t the only one with superhero connections. Samuel L. Jackson and Olga Kurylenko are both in it too, and I know them as Nick Fury and Taskmaster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Okay, so I’m a bit of a movie buff and I just stumbled across the stats for Afterburn. It’s pretty shocking – they apparently spent $56 million making it, but it only brought in around $832,000 worldwide! And get this, it’s a 2025 release and Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t even have a critics’ score for it yet because so few people have reviewed it – only eight, can you believe it?

The movie Afterburn currently has a 57% rating on Popcornmeter. You can watch it on MGM+ in the U.S., and on Prime Video in other countries.
