Dave Bautista rules out MCU return as beloved character Drax: ‘It ran its course’
Dave Bautista shared some disheartening news with Marvel enthusiasts, as he’s made it clear that there won’t be a comeback for the cherished character Drax.
Initially, Drax the Destroyer made his debut in the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” as an interstellar combatant, determined to avenge his kin who were slain by a certain individual. Over time, this character garnered immense popularity among fans, reappearing for two subsequent “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and a festive special.
Bautista was part of the cast for Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, but decided to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2023 to focus on more intense acting opportunities.
Despite the possibility that some stars may reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Drax actor Dave Bautista himself has made it clear that he won’t be coming back to play his role in a possible Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Drax feels like a character from my past. Unless James Gunn personally reaches out to me for another round as Drax, I don’t see myself jumping back into the role. It seems like that ship has sailed, given that Gunn has moved on to different projects.
Previously, Gunn collaborated on scripting and directing the current ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ series, but he has now shifted to a competing studio, DC, where he serves as co-chairman and co-CEO alongside Peter Safran. Their joint mission is to create a revamped DC Universe.
Although it’s not planned for Drax to come back, the actor expressed interest in working with Marvel again, potentially taking on a new character. This was made evident by Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom within the MCU.
Bautista expressed that he yearns to be part of that particular world, as he is an admirer of it, sharing a passion for the comic book genre and its entire universe.
I really want to join the Marvel or DC universe. I’ve expressed this interest to James and the Russo brothers. In fact, I’ve spoken with them all, telling them not to ignore me. If a role that fits me well and they need comes up, I’d be more than willing to consider it. Unfortunately, it seems that the Drax character has reached its end.
The first three “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, along with the special titled “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” can all be found streaming on Disney+.
