Darren Hayes scuttles any chance of a Savage Garden reunion as he claims his former bandmate Daniel Jones was ‘incredibly unkind’
As a long-time follower of Darren Hayes’ career, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness every time I hear about the rift between him and his former bandmate Daniel Jones. Savage Garden was more than just a band; they were an integral part of my teenage years, providing the soundtrack to countless memories and moments of pure joy.
Darren Hayes has effectively ruled out the possibility of a Savage Garden reunion, as he expressed that his previous bandmate, Daniel Jones, had been remarkably uncaring.
The duo known as Savage Garden, consisting of Darren and guitarist Daniel Jones, came together in 1993. They went on to create numerous chart-topping songs, including To the Moon and Back and Truly Madly Deeply.
However, a rift between the bandmates caused them to part ways at the height of their fame in 2001.
On the Jase & Lauren show of Nova on Thursday, during a promotion for his memoir “Unloveable,” Darren, who is 52 years old, was inquired about the possibility of the successful duo performing together once more.
‘You guys don’t talk now do you? You and Daniel,’ co-host Jasion Hawkins asked the star?
Darren responded directly, “Negative. He was excessively rude to me, and he wasn’t honest about things when our band disbanded, which left me taking the fall.
Pushing for an answer, Jason inquired whether there might be any possibility of a reunion if Daniel reached out, but Darren firmly rejected the idea.
‘No,’ he repeated. ‘I’ll just stop you there. No.’
Darren acknowledged that so many years had gone by since then, making it unlikely for a peaceful resolution or reunion to occur.
He stated that he declined since he had previously reached out multiple times, offering to make a public apology while being recorded.
In a noticeably irritated tone, Darren remarked: ‘His actions towards me were out in the open. Frankly, nobody is interested in such topics. They prefer listening to music instead.’
In 2022, Darren referred to a press conference Daniel gave back in 2001 where he expressed his sadness over the dissolution of Savage Garden, adding that Darren had not discussed this matter with him before making it public. He shared this during an interview with Kyle and Jackie O.
He made that public statement, during which he expressed, “This is the first I’m learning about it,” which many perceived as an unwise comment since they believed he had departed from the group, he later stated.
Darren confided in Sarah Grynberg during her A Life of Greatness podcast that the separation left him feeling deeply betrayed on a very personal level.
Darren stated, “The reason for our disagreement was because he publicly claimed the band’s split was unexpected, but in reality, it wasn’t.
Darren shared with Sarah that although his previous bandmate might now be telling a different version of events, it came far too late.
He didn’t make any adjustments on that matter initially. However, he finally addressed it about a decade afterward, but by then it was a full decade too late, and I endured greatly as a result,” he expressed.
‘It was a huge personal betrayal for me and I speak about it in the book as politely as I possibly can because for the longest time, I just kept expecting him to, one day, just sit down and say the truth.’
Darren clarified that at first, he chose to overlook Daniel’s account of the situation, but eventually became frustrated as he was repeatedly held responsible for the disbandment of the acclaimed pop group, even though it was actually Daniel who desired to depart.
He mentioned that there were several explanations for his initial actions, which he chose to overlook in the moment.
However, about three or four years after the band’s disbandment and despite being continually blamed for it, I came to understand that I no longer wished to continue feigning closeness with someone who hadn’t shown much kindness towards me. The truth, in essence, was that I desired something more genuine.
‘We don’t have a relationship at all because of that.’
Originating in Brisbane back in 1993, the band Savage Garden put out two of their studio albums: “Savage Garden” in 1997 and “Affirmation” in 1999.
In total, their albums managed to sell approximately 23 million units globally, and they set a record by winning an impressive ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997 for their debut album and popular tracks such as “To The Moon and Back” and “Truly Madly Deeply.
