I was really excited to see what Darren Aronofsky was doing with his new project, but honestly, the first trailer for his AI-generated Revolutionary War series, On This Day… 1776, isn’t hitting the mark with a lot of fans. I saw the sneak peek on Culture Crave, and while the idea is to recreate important moments from the founding of America, people don’t seem too impressed with how it’s turned out so far.
This series reimagines famous moments from American history as short films. It combines classic filmmaking with new AI technology from Google DeepMind. Importantly, the episode On This Day… 1776 features professional, union voice actors – it doesn’t use artificial voices for narration. You can watch the trailer for On This Day… 1776 below.
The trailer for On This Day… 1776 received mostly negative feedback. Some viewers pointed out that it looked strangely artificial, a common issue with AI-generated videos, while others reacted by creating memes.
The series On This Day… 1776 was created by Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup AI studio and is being distributed by Time Studios. It will be released on the Time Studios YouTube channel throughout 2026, and the first two episodes were launched on Thursday, January 29th.
According to Time Studios president Ben Bitonti, the series showcases how AI can be used creatively by artists to enhance storytelling, not replace traditional skills. It opens up new possibilities and allows creators to explore ideas that were previously impossible.
