Darius Rucker falls during a Hootie & the Blowfish show, then blames all 58 of his years
As a devoted admirer of Darius Rucker, I must say that his resilience and grace under pressure are truly inspiring. Despite the unexpected tumble during his performance at Riverfront Revival, he managed to keep his cool, laugh it off, and continue with the show – a testament to his years of experience on stage.
It’s not always beers and sunshine — but even when it’s not, Darius Rucker will have a laugh.
58-year-old Dixie Chicks Grammy winner, who also happens to be the founder of Riverfront Revival in North Charleston, SC, had a fall during their performance with Hootie & the Blowfish at the festival on Saturday. This was the band’s debut at the music event, which the artist has headlined annually since its establishment in 2022.
In a fan-recorded video, it was seen that Rucker stumbled over an on-stage speaker during his 2009 hit single “Alright.” Initially falling on his hands, he then rolled onto his back. With quick assistance from a camera operator, Rucker quickly got up and humorously commented, “I’m as old as hell.” Despite the incident, his band continued playing without missing a beat.
Later on, Rucker commented, referring to their 43-city Hootie & the Blowfish tour which started in April and concluded in North Charleston this summer, “We’ve been at it all season long.” He added, “I hadn’t taken a spill until I tripped up in my hometown.
After watching the video, some fans hypothesized online that the cause of the “Wagon Wheel” singer’s fall wasn’t solely due to his age; they suggested he might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Earlier this year, Rucker admitted guilt and agreed to a year’s probation for a 2023 drug possession arrest in Tennessee.
@htownkat on TikTok remarked, ‘I guess he’s very off-key today. That’s not the usual style of Darius Rucker when he sings,’ commenting on the video showing him stumbling.
A representative for Rucker did not respond immediately Tuesday to The Times’ request for comment.
Although Rucker hasn’t provided a reason for the fall, he reposted the video on Instagram on Tuesday, commenting that he “continued singing regardless.
