Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 & Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Major Storyline Alteration Expected

The upcoming second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” is expected to change a significant plot point, potentially setting the stage for the “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” storyline. After the Netflix “Daredevil” series concluded, several characters transitioned into other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Charlie Cox, who played Matt Murdock, appeared in both “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “She-Hulk,” while Vincent D’Onofrio, as Wilson Fisk, showed up in “Hawkeye” and “Echo.”

The first season of Born Again made a clearer link between the world of Daredevil and the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, hinting that events in the show could have consequences for the larger MCU. It also established significant developments, like Kingpin becoming mayor of New York City and starting to crack down on vigilantes.

As a viewer, I’m really intrigued by how the new series, set in New York City, could ripple outwards and affect other heroes – especially Spider-Man, given Kingpin’s influence. What’s particularly interesting is the timing: this series drops a few months before the Brand New Day movie. It feels like they’re setting up a big shift in Kingpin’s story, almost as if he won’t be a major player in that upcoming film. It’s a clever way to potentially reshape his arc and leave a lasting impact on the Marvel universe.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Can’t Use Kingpin

Although Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s important to remember that Marvel Studios doesn’t actually own the rights to the character. Sony still owns Spider-Man, and Marvel has to negotiate an agreement with Sony to include him in their films.

Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, has a unique deal with Marvel. According to actor Vincent D’Onofrio, in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (as reported by CBR), Marvel Studios is currently only permitted to use his portrayal of the character in television series, not in movies.

As a huge fan of the character, it’s frustrating to hear that Marvel having me appear in a film is so complicated. It all comes down to who owns the rights, and right now, that limits me to TV shows – any kind of series, really. Sadly, even a standalone movie featuring my character isn’t possible because of these ownership issues.

In an interview with The Playlist’s Bingeworthy TV podcast, James D’Onofrio revealed he won’t appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day film. He also indicated that Marvel Studios still doesn’t own the rights to the Kingpin character.

I’m going to hold off on making any decisions until the movie studio secures the rights to my character and includes me in a film. Then I’ll see where things stand and decide what to do.

Kingpin Likely Won’t Be Mayor By The End Of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

The first season of Born Again concludes with Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, gaining control of New York by creating a team to fight vigilantes and imprisoning his rivals. As this happens, Matt Murdock is gathering allies to oppose Fisk, and this could include Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, who is set to return in the second season of Born Again within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Because of Kingpin’s strong opposition to vigilantes and his powerful position, the new era of Spider-Man, known as Brand New Day, couldn’t ignore him. If Kingpin remained mayor during Brand New Day, his team would create significant problems for Spider-Man, especially considering Kingpin’s history with him from the Born Again storyline.

Okay, so here’s something interesting for Marvel fans. It looks like Jon Bernthal is reprising his role as The Punisher in the upcoming Brand New Day movie, which nicely ties into the Born Again series. And speaking of Born Again, the show seems to be setting things up so that Kingpin will be out of office before the next Spider-Man film. Basically, they’re building towards Matt Murdock taking down the Kingpin, and honestly, it’s a smart move. Given some potential timeline issues, I’m betting we won’t see Fisk as the mayor of New York by the end of Born Again season two. It’s a good way to streamline things for future stories.
