Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Just Connected To The New Avengers & You Probably Missed It

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 1

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is now available, and it includes an exciting link to the New Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the release of Thunderbolts last year, many viewers speculated whether events from recent MCU films – specifically Sentry’s actions as The Void – would play a role in the new season, given that both shows take place in New York City.

The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again doesn’t immediately introduce a connection, but it does feature a surprising link to a key character from the Thunderbolts/New Avengers team.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s Premiere Features A Surprising Connection To Valentina Allegra de Fontaine

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again kicks off with Matthew Lillard joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Mr. Charles. He’s a government agent sent from Washington, D.C., to deal with a crisis in New York City: a cargo ship secretly filled with weapons has sunk in Mayor Fisk’s port, and he needs to resolve the situation.

Once Daredevil was on board, the ship was deliberately sunk to keep Mayor Fisk’s connection to it secret and protect his reputation.

When things began to fall apart, Mr. Charles made a single phone call to CIA Director and OXE Group CEO Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who then convinced the attorney general to back down, resolving the issue in Mayor Fisk’s office.

It seems Charles probably reports directly to Val and works for the CIA. Even more significantly, Charles is now collaborating with Fisk to recover the stolen goods, strongly implying that Val was directly involved in the arrangement that allowed the weapons to pass through Fisk’s port.

Val has consistently demonstrated significant power and influence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s especially clear after her involvement in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. She’s presented as the person who created and funds the new version of the Avengers. However, revealing this team at the end of Thunderbolts was largely a strategic move to distract from her own questionable actions. She essentially had to allow the New Avengers to operate freely to prevent them from uncovering her secrets.

Despite everything, it seems Val is still involved in covert CIA activities, possibly including transporting large weapons through New York City using Mayor Fisk’s Red Hook free port.

Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles Just Became One of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s Most Intriguing Characters

Matthew Lillard’s character, Mr. Charles, immediately grabs your attention as one of the most interesting additions to season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. Because of who he knows, Charles isn’t afraid of Mayor Fisk, and their new working relationship promises a compelling and complex dynamic in this new MCU season.

Although Fisk runs New York City as mayor, Charles generally works on a much larger, global level. He’s likely to be very unpredictable, even though he seems relaxed.

It’s also possible that Charles could help bring Fisk and de Fontaine together for a meeting down the line. After all, Valentina was first introduced in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier series.

No matter what, bringing in a character connected to someone as influential as Valentina and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe immediately suggests that season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again will have much higher stakes than previous seasons.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release Tuesday nights on Disney+.
