Danny Ocean gets political about Venezuela’s election in ‘Venequia’

As a huge fan of Danny Ocean, I am in awe of his unwavering dedication to using his voice and platform to raise awareness about the critical situation in his home country, Venezuela. The tension leading up to the recent elections was palpable, and Danny’s release of the surprise EP “Venequia” served as a powerful reminder of the emotions felt by millions around the world affected by the economic collapse in Venezuela.

During his break from performing in Australia and New Zealand, Danny Ocean found himself preoccupied with the approaching Venezuan elections.

“We’re all very tense, waiting to see what’s going to happen,” he told The Times.

Before the July 28th vote in his homeland, the singer-songwriter and native of Caracas, Me Rehúso, unexpectedly released an EP called “Venequia” a week prior. This collection consists of seven tracks, which, according to him, aim to convey the emotions experienced by millions worldwide due to Venezuela’s economic downturn, once a prosperous Latin American nation.

In Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro, often accused of being authoritarian, aims to secure six more years in power. However, he is challenged by Edmundo González Urrutia, a former diplomat, who currently leads in the polls with a double-digit advantage. This election is viewed as pivotal by Latin American observers and organizations like Ocean.

Just prior to the election, the artist remains an outspoken supporter and uses his social media, performances, and music to convey his deep affection for his nation, while bringing attention to the plight of approximately 8 million Venezuelan refugees who have sought safety abroad.

In these songs, the underlying meaning becomes clear after multiple listens that the artists’ beliefs have significantly influenced the creation of this album. The fifth track, “Una niña de Venezuela,” poignantly conveys the experiences of immigrants through its lyrics.

In my experience as an immigrant, I can only speak from my own perspective. I too had to make the difficult journey to the United States and request political asylum. Like many others, I faced the challenges that come with starting a new life in a foreign land.

As a moviegoer who’s been following Ocean’s tour, I can tell you that during his recent stop in Australia, I was reminded of the incredible global fanbase he has. The way they rallied behind him, especially after the release of his surprise album, left an indelible impression on me.

Ocean explained that these interactions include people sharing their own stories through the popular “Escala in Panamá” song and music video. Since its release on social media, fans have been deeply moved by it. The video starts with a couple preparing for a journey, followed by increasingly intense scenes and some individuals leaving in a hurry. Finally, the screen goes dark, and a flight attendant’s voice welcomes viewers to Venezuela, saying “Welcome home.” Then, the words “Can you imagine?” appear.

“Most of the tales I’m sent are similar,” Ocean remarked. “Stories of those who’ve had to part with cherished family and friends.”

After finishing up a two-year tour and releasing new music, Ocean intends to relax in Fiji for a while. However, he won’t completely disconnect from the news, particularly about Venezuela’s current situation. He hopes that his latest collection of songs will evoke memories of South America’s recent past.

“Ocean expressed that we’re facing an identity dilemma and our friends and families are estranged. He wanted the world to understand our struggles.”
