Danny Dyer talks “stepping out of comfort zone” for new raunchy period drama
As a gamer with a keen eye for character development and a soft spot for British television, I must admit that the upcoming series “Rivals” has piqued my interest. The transformation of Danny Dyer from Mick Carter to Freddie Jones is nothing short of intriguing, especially considering his reputation for playing hardened characters.
Danny Dyer has spoken about taking on a new type of character in the upcoming 80s romp Rivals.
Previously known “EastEnders” actor adorned a wig and sported a substantial mustache for portraying Freddie Jones in the film version of a Jilly Cooper novel’s character.
Known for portraying tough characters such as Mick Carter on Walford, actor Dyer admitted that taking on the role of electronics tycoon Freddie was a significant departure from his usual roles and a challenge to his comfort zone.
During an exclusive conversation prior to the show’s premiere, he shared with Digital Spy: “I truly loved playing Freddie. Moreover, I’ve never appeared so distinctly altered in a role before. I believe it was crucial for me to transform my appearance.
I grew quite fond of the mustache I sported, and even my kids took a liking to it. They were genuinely upset when I shaved it off. The mustache was entirely mine, something I could call my own. To be honest, I felt quite proud of it. Wearing that mustache provided me with a unique opportunity.
Danny’s character Freddie harbors a smoldering affection for Lizzie Vereker, played by Katherine Parkinson, who pens provocative novels, reminiscent of the works penned by Jilly Cooper herself.
She told us: “I thought Danny stepped into Freddie’s shoes completely seamlessly.
It’s amusing how one becomes recognized for certain abilities, yet still feels at ease exploring other talents that aren’t as widely acknowledged. In this case, Danny doesn’t go through an extensive process of getting into character or anything similar.
Previously featured on The IT Crowd, this actor delved into discussing her unique encounter with portraying a character that diverged somewhat from the humorous roles she is primarily recognized for.
She mentioned, “Given that Danny and I both have extensive theatre backgrounds, we’ve often played similar roles multiple times. However, these roles may not have received as much attention from the general audience.
In other words, we find it familiar, yet viewers may find it slightly challenging. This seems like a rather appealing spot for us.
Rivals premieres on October 18 exclusively on Disney+.
