Danny Boyle explains real reason why 28 Years Later 3 with Cillian Murphy has been delayed

Danny Boyle has shared the reason behind the hold-up with the planned third film in the 28 Years Later series. While he doesn’t know exactly when filming will begin, he has promised fans that they still plan to finish the movie trilogy.

The popular horror series came back last year with 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle. This January saw the release of the next film, The Bone Temple, which was directed by Nia DaCosta.

The films were completed quickly because they were filmed one after the other. 28 Years Later was a big hit, earning over $150 million globally. While critics loved The Bone Temple, it didn’t make as much money in theaters.

Danny Boyle is directing a third film in the series, but unlike the first two, it wasn’t filmed at the same time. He recently explained the reason for this in an interview with JoBlo.

We didn’t have enough time to film it this year because the location in Britain only allows filming during specific seasons. We’re hoping to shoot it next year, and everyone is excited about the project – Alex Garland has written a fantastic script.

Director Mike Flanagan mentioned that the next installment, as envisioned by director Maria DaCosta, will likely focus on a theme of ‘redemption.’ This is a shift from the previous films, which explored ideas of ‘family’ and the origins of evil.

That’s what we’re aiming for. It’s a big undertaking, and the story will be set in England. We won’t be showing American soldiers coming to the rescue, as it’s unlikely they’d be deployed anywhere these days, as far as we know.

If a third movie is made, Cillian Murphy is expected to return. He previously appeared as Jim in a short scene at the end of The Bone Temple, where he and his daughter, Sam, saw Spike and Kellie running away from a group of infected people.

It’s currently unknown whether Naomie Harris, who acted alongside Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later, will return as her character, Selena. Director Danny Boyle told Empire Magazine in June 2025 that, right now, only Cillian Murphy is confirmed to be back.
