Dannielynn Birkhead’s Emotional Tribute: Why She Wears Anna Nicole’s Iconic Dresses

More recently, Dannielynn, the daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith, disclosed why she often dons her mother’s garments.

Just before the Kentucky Derby, the 18-year-old girl who lost her model mother recently, decided to wear a dress that was previously donned by Smith at the Barnstable Brown Gala back in 2004, for this year’s edition of the event.

Accompanied by her father Larry Birkhead, she graced the event with her presence, striking poses in a heartfelt, black dress adorned with crystals on its straps and featuring a low back.

At the Barnstable Brown House in Louisville, Dannielynn opened up about her preference for wearing her mother’s attire, revealing the touching motive behind her choice of a particular gown on that occasion.

In 2007, when Dannielynn was only five months old, her mother tragically died at the age of 39.

At the event, the young girl choked back tears as she discussed her deceased mother while on the red carpet, the significance of her attire evident.

‘This is the closest to a hug I can get from her,’ she told Access Hollywood on Friday.

On that very same day, Dannielynn’s dad posted a picture on Instagram showing them both at the event.

Dannielynn donned the same dress that Anna Nicole wore 21 years earlier, at the very same event. Her father, Birkhead, commented in his post, “Life comes full circle.

‘She said she chose the dress because it was her Mom’s and “super cool.”‘

Additionally, she mirrored her mother’s style by pulling back her golden locks into a similar voluminous ponytail, leaving soft curls to cascade around her features.

At the gala event, Birkhead, aged 52, additionally discussed his feelings upon seeing his daughter wear that particular gown for the very first time.

‘It was emotional because the last time I saw that dress was on Anna,’ he told People on Friday. 

He mentioned that when Dannielynn was young, she approached and gently touched the dress. Now that she’s matured enough to wear it, it feels incredibly unreal that we’re experiencing this moment together.

Birkhead and Smith met at the Barnstable Gala in 2003. 

When Dannielynn was just three years old, she attended her first Kentucky Derby with her father. 

Ever since that time, the father-daughter pair have turned the Barnstable Gala and the Kentucky Derby into an annual event they never miss.

On Sunday, Dannielynn bore a striking resemblance to her deceased mother while wearing the star’s jewelry at the Kentucky Derby.

She impressed elegantly, wearing a strapless tulle gown in a soft green hue by Mac Duggal, adorned with a pendant necklace, watch, multiple bangles, and a fascinator trimmed with feathers – each item carefully selected from her mother’s personal collection.

In his recent Instagram post, Birkhead shared the emotional bond behind the jewelry, stating it came from Anna Nicole’s personal archives.

Additionally, he playfully commented on his Derby-day transformation, stating, “She convinced me to get a haircut as she thought I resembled an inexpensive version of Keith Urban! Still hurts to admit it. Wagering on a fantastic time and favorable weather for a cherished family custom.

The heartfelt homage was presented not long after Dannielynn made a striking appearance at the Barnstable Brown Gala, where she captivated the crowd while wearing one of her mother’s famous, open-back, full-length gowns.

As a devoted daughter, I selected my mother’s gown to don at the upcoming event, and my father sees it as an exploration of personal style on my part. To me, there’s a profound significance in choosing this dress.

Birkhead expressed his relief, saying, “It’s wonderful that she’s beginning to wear some of Smith’s clothes. She could easily choose a different outfit every day for the rest of her life without ever repeating the same ensemble.

Currently, he keeps the clothes of Smith, which might be useful for his daughter in the future, stored away.

She is beginning to develop an interest in the fashion and items from her mother’s realm.

Dannielynn has attended the Barnstable Brown Gala with her father since she was a little girl. 

Previously, the duo showcased radiant grins during their visit to the occasion, with the young lady sporting a fashionable Gianfranco Ferre gown that was previously adorned by Janet Jackson.

In the year 2023, Smith’s daughter respectfully honored the model by donning a Guess shirt adorned with black and white pictures of the deceased celebrity.

Apart from her attire, she also donned a multi-layered tulle skirt in black, complete with a wide, ornate silver bow-adorned belt at the waist.

In a 2019 conversation with DailyMail.com, Birkhead shared insights on bringing up his daughter following Smith’s years under public scrutiny.

In September 2006, Smith joyfully welcomed her daughter into the world; unfortunately, she passed away just under a year later, leaving behind this new life.

After her passing, several people came forward claiming to be Dannielynn’s father, among them being Birkhead. Subsequent DNA tests confirmed that Birkhead was indeed her biological father.

He mentioned that people frequently ask, “Will she become an actress or a model?” But he never steers her towards any particular career path.

To clarify, I frequently find myself in situations where I need to gently decline offers, saying something along the lines of, “I’m afraid she isn’t keen on such activities at the moment. She’s simply living life as a child should, enjoying her youth.

Birkhead, a resident of Kentucky along with his daughter, had also mentioned earlier: ‘Last year, I was taken aback when she enrolled in an acting class.’

‘I recently received an email from a teacher who praised Dannielynn for delivering one of the most convincing performances across the entire school. If she wishes to continue acting like this as she grows older, we’ll assess the situation when that time comes.’

She also welcomed a son named Daniel in 1986 with ex-husband Billy Wayne Smith. 

At age 20, in September 2006, Daniel tragically lost his life in Smith’s hospital room following an accidental drug overdose. Just a few days prior, Smith had welcomed her daughter Dannielynn into the world.

Larry clarified, “[Dannielynn] is aware primarily that her mother was well-known and understands about Daniel. I make an effort to involve both of them since Daniel can occasionally be overlooked.

‘We try to talk about him and I shared a birthday with him, so we always celebrated together.’

He mentioned, “I often share tales about those times with her, and I aim to keep it light since she’s only recently turned into a teenage girl. I believe some of the heavier topics might be more appropriate later on.

During an interview with DailyMail.com in 2023, Birkhead was questioned about whether his daughter showed any traits similar to Smith, who he initially encountered in 2003.

‘Yeah she can spend my money like her mom. And she loves to do that,’ he humorously stated. 

Later on, he conveyed, “I’ve established a solid base from which one can clearly see, ‘This is it.’ Life has returned to its usual course.

‘I have high standards and prefer certain things. She’s down-to-earth and modest, without any airs. Unlike some celebrity offspring, she hasn’t led a privileged life. Instead, she attended a public school throughout her education, which was her personal choice. Her preference was to attend public school rather than private.’

Beyond praising, Birkhead enthused, “Dannielynn consistently earns excellent grades and is even on the honors list. She’s tackling college-level courses. I’m confident that Anna would feel incredibly proud seeing her progress. And I certainly am.
