Ranging from butterbeers to chocolate frogs, these enchanting edibles appear to offer an enticing magical experience. Interestingly, the main character, Daniel Radcliffe, admitted that he was generally fine with the eating scenes, but one particular scene left him feeling quite queasy as he described it as “pretty disgusting.
In a 2020 episode of First We Feast, host Sean Evans asked Daniel Radcliffe about “one highlight and one lowlight” when it came to the food scenes of Harry Potter. Here was the British actor’s answer for the “highlight,” and I don’t blame him:
At Hogwarts, the extravagant feasting events, especially the breakfasts, stood out. I, as an 11 or 12-year-old kid, found myself loading my plate with fried eggs, bacon, sausages, and baked beans almost every morning for what felt like endless days. It was quite a treat.
It’d be heavenly to enjoy a breakfast as delightful as that, especially in character! I recall watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and adoring the scene where the Great Hall tables mysteriously overflowed with food. Oh, what a grand welcome at Hogwarts that would have been!
In the world of Harry Potter, it was mentioned that BTS fact about The Sorcerer’s Stone, real food would not taste good if left out for several days due to spoilage. Professor Flitwick, portrayed by Warwick Davis, noted that the rotten food would give off an unpleasant odor and would not be consumed in subsequent takes. It was lamented that there wasn’t a magic spell available to keep food fresh and free of foul smell.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the character known as The Boy Who Lived faced a significant hurdle when he was required to complete three potentially deadly tasks in The Triwizard Tournament. Despite the fact that some might believe the most “intense” and “crazy” feats performed by Daniel Radcliffe were during the underwater training for one scene, he also had to endure eating something quite unpleasant.
In one movie, I found myself munching on what appeared to be black licorice lace disguised as underwater seaweed. Swallowing it wasn’t pleasant at all, and after the third or fourth take, I couldn’t help but groan, “How many more of these are left?
Reflecting on that scene, Daniel Radcliffe certainly seemed genuinely repulsed as Harry ate the gillyweed before diving into The Black Lake. It’s possible that some of his disdain was genuine acting, but personally, I have no desire to sample black licorice, especially after learning about the actor from Swiss Army Man.
Having an English breakfast during filming seems like a delightful treat, but munching on black licorice lace sounds more like enduring pain. Regardless of whether it was delectable or dreadful, the cast of Harry Potter always had ample food choices to keep them satisfied throughout the movies. This makes me curious about what kind of unusual dishes the cast of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series will get to try.
