Daniel Johns Posts Cryptic Birthday Message, Announces Social Media Hiatus

Daniel Johns has shared that he’s stepping back from social media platforms for a while, marking his 46th birthday.

On Tuesday, the lead singer of Silverchair shared a post on Instagram to commemorate the day, yet included a mysterious comment hinting at seeking solitude, possibly for the creation of a fresh piece of artwork.

In his words, ‘Time, like art, is subjective and perceived differently by everyone.’

As an artist, you’re constantly on a journey, seeking to capture the essence of joy and sorrow while adding a touch of the strange and unexpected. This is where the drama unfolds, where laughter echoes, where words paint pictures, where melodies sing, and where stories come alive on the silver screen. That was his explanation.

‘Everything is beautiful if you let it be.’

John wrote in his post: ‘I need to travel back in time to wrap up something, so I won’t be active on social media for a while. However, my team will take care of things for me. I’ll still have my phone. Sending lots of love.’

Over the last few years, the rock icon has mostly avoided the limelight, following some high-profile legal troubles and substance addiction problems that made headlines.

In 2022, Johns released his second solo album, FutureNever, while in rehab.

Through his record company BMG, the distressed rock star characterized the album as “chaotic” and mentioned that he is no longer trying to evade or escape his past.

I sought help in a rehabilitation center towards the end of March, 2022. This decision came about following an incident on the Pacific Highway at North Arm Cove near Newcastle, NSW, where I was stopped on March 23rd and found to have a blood-alcohol level over three times the legal limit. I took responsibility for my actions by pleading guilty.

On March 23, along the Pacific Highway close to Newcastle, authorities reported that Johns drove into oncoming traffic and struck a van.

On the fateful day of April 11, 2022, at the esteemed Raymond Terrace Local Court, it was my ardent lawyer, Bryan Wrench, who stood in my stead and humbly pled guilty on my behalf. A moment that echoes with the weight of truth and justice, I stand as an unwavering supporter, proudly bearing witness to this pivotal chapter in the saga of my beloved idol.

As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but share the news that John managed to dodge a prison term for excessive drunk driving. The judge decided that incarceration wouldn’t be particularly helpful for this “deeply troubled” rock legend, suggesting that other forms of rehabilitation might be more beneficial instead.

He received an intensive probation term lasting ten months – it’s a court sentence that involves serving time outside of prison for up to two years, with close monitoring by Community Corrections.

Apart from losing his driving privileges for a period of seven months, he was mandated to equip his vehicle with a breathalyzer system that prevents operation if alcohol is detected, for a duration of 24 months upon regaining his driver’s license.

According to John’s attorney, Bryan Wrench, John has been making every effort to demonstrate to the court just how seriously he has approached the charges since his entry into rehabilitation. This is evident in his commitment to staying sober after leaving rehab, as he has chosen to abstain from alcohol.

On April 16, 2022, a conversation between John and someone else about his alcohol issues was shared on Instagram, in which he openly discussed his relationship with alcohol and extended an apology.

He admitted, “My alcohol consumption grew into a challenge I hadn’t fully acknowledged, and I’ve often relied on it as a means to distract myself from various psychological problems I’ve carried with me since my childhood.

As someone who has faced similar struggles, I acknowledge the depth of some of these challenges, and I realize now that alcohol was never the solution I thought it was. I regret treating it as if it were medication, a mistake I deeply regret. In my heart, I feel broken, but I want to express my sincere apologies for any harm or discomfort I may have caused.

On the night of March 23rd, I acknowledge that all actions were mine, and I feel profound regret. Every day, I’m striving to correct my mistakes. I assure you that I’m dealing with this situation in a serious and private manner.

Immediately following the March incident, John shared that he had been experiencing ‘episodes of intense fear or anxiety’, and the accident took place when he got ‘misplaced’ on the highway.

He shared that his mental well-being is an ongoing journey. There are times when he feels great and other times not so much, but he’s constantly working on it.

For the past week, I’ve been having panic attacks. Last night, during my drive, I found myself lost and unfortunately had an accident. Thankfully, I and everyone else involved are alright.

In addition to my treatment, I’ve resorted to using alcohol as a means of coping with my anxiety and depression. I understand that this approach is neither sustainable nor healthy.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself compelled to take a temporary leave of absence. I’m making the difficult decision to seek help at a rehabilitation center, and I’m uncertain about the duration of my stay. Your unwavering affection and encouragement mean the world to me, as they always have. Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this challenging time.

Just a few weeks ago, the car accident involving drunk driving occurred, and it followed close on the heels of Daniel criticizing his former Silverchair bandmates for not providing support when he was severely ill back in 2002.

A crash due to drinking and driving took place recently, shortly after Daniel publicly accused his past Silverchair associates of failing to assist him during a critical illness in 2002.

In a Facebook update, the vocalist and guitar player disclosed that he had received a diagnosis of reactive arthritis, a condition causing severe joint inflammation, during the release of their fourth album, Diorama. This health issue left him in agonizing pain.

As someone dealing with anxiety and anorexia concurrently, I can affirm that the support I sought wasn’t sufficient to my needs. It seemed to me that my band was more about running a business than providing familial care and understanding.

Daniel’s original bandmates, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou, have disclosed the precise reasons behind the legendary rock group Silverchair’s dissolution.

In their shared memoir, they stated that Daniel repeatedly put the group through emotional turmoil by disbanding Silverchair, only to later reconsider his decision.

Ultimately, their journey concluded when they took the stage at the Groovin’ The Moo music festival in 2010.

After wrapping up my latest performance, I found myself on the receiving end of an enigmatic conversation with Daniel. He simply stated, “It’s unavoidable.

Although Daniel didn’t directly confirm the band’s disbandment, Ben and Chris learned from their manager that the group had ended, with an upcoming press statement about their ‘temporary halt’ being distributed to the media.

Originally, this duo gained worldwide recognition when they were just fifteen years old, launching their career powerfully with their first album, “Frogstomp,” released in 1995. However, they disbanded in the year 2011.

The musicians have said they had ‘drifted apart’ from Johns since Silverchair disbanded.
