The new film Anemone, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis, is now available to rent or buy online. This marks a return to acting for Daniel Day-Lewis, the three-time Oscar winner known for roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln, after his retirement in 2017 following Phantom Thread. Anemone had a limited theatrical release on October 3rd, and expanded to more theaters on October 10th.
You can now rent Anemone for $19.99 or buy it for $24.99 on demand through platforms like Prime Video. Since it’s a Focus Features film (owned by Universal), it will likely be available to stream on Peacock in the future.
Ronan Day-Lewis’s first feature film, Anemone, tells the story of a man traveling into the forests of Northern England to find his estranged brother. The brother lives as a hermit and the two share a difficult history marked by significant events from their past.
The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, along with Sean Bean (known for his roles in Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones), Samantha Morton (an Academy Award nominee for Sweet and Lowdown and In America), Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.
Premiering at the New York Film Festival in September 2025, Anemone received a mixed reaction from critics, earning a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While reviewers applauded the return of Daniel Day-Lewis and his powerful performance, the film is more successful as a showcase of his continued appeal and the striking visuals of first-time director Ronan Day-Lewis than as a cohesive and fully developed story.
Although there was excitement surrounding Daniel Day-Lewis’ return to acting after an eight-year break, the film Anemone didn’t attract many moviegoers, earning just around $1 million in theaters. It does have a decent 60% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though. Now, less than three weeks after its theatrical release, Anemone is available to rent or buy on demand.
I always felt Anemone faced an uphill battle, and sadly, it never really got the amazing reviews it deserved. But you know, I’m trying to find a positive side to its struggles. If this film somehow inspires Daniel Day-Lewis to fall in love with acting again, then maybe, just maybe, the film’s lack of success won’t have been in vain. I’d be thrilled if it could bring that spark back for him.
