Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for son’s directorial debut, ‘Anemone’
As a movie enthusiast with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that the return of Daniel Day-Lewis to the silver screen is like a long-lost friend coming home for dinner – a delightful surprise! The prospect of witnessing his acting prowess in his son Ronan’s directorial debut, “Anemone,” has me eagerly awaiting the popcorn and the dimming lights.
Daniel Day-Lewis’ retirement from acting is looking more like a hiatus.
The only man to win the best actor Oscar three times is returning after seven years away from Hollywood to act in his son Ronan’s directorial debut, “Anemone.” The film, which the Day-Lewis duo co-wrote, is pegged as “an exploration of the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers” and the “dynamics of familial bonds,” Variety reported.
This past Sunday, the 67-year-old Daniel Day-Lewis was snapped on the movie set in Manchester, England, where he was seen riding a motorcycle with his fellow actor Sean Bean (from “The Lord of the Rings”). Just two days after, Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment revealed they would jointly oversee the production.
Peter Kujawski, head of Focus Features, expressed immense enthusiasm about collaborating with emerging visual artist Ronan Day-Lewis on his debut feature film, where he will work alongside Daniel Day-Lewis. According to Kujawski, they have written an extraordinary script that we eagerly anticipate sharing with audiences, in collaboration with Plan B Entertainment.
26-year-old artist Ronan Day-Lewis, who has exhibited his artwork in New York before, unveiled his inaugural international solo exhibit titled “That Summer We All Saw Them” on Tuesday, in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.
In 2017, when Daniel Day-Lewis declared his departure from acting, just prior to being nominated once more for the best actor category in the 2018 film “Phantom Thread,” he failed to provide reasons behind this decision.
Daniel Day-Lewis has chosen to retire from acting, according to his representative Leslee Dart. He expresses deep appreciation towards everyone he’s worked with throughout his career and the audiences who have supported him. This decision is personal, and neither Daniel nor his team will provide additional comments about it.
The “Lincoln” star later told W Magazine that there hadn’t been a clear impetus for his decision.
He expressed that he hadn’t quite understood it yet, but the idea seemed to have stuck with him persistently, and he couldn’t shake it off. For most of his life, he’d often talked about giving up acting, yet never fully committed. However, this time, something within him changed, and he found himself irresistibly drawn towards quitting. It was a feeling that had grown into an overwhelming need. It was as if he was compelled to follow through with it.
The actor went on to say: “I feel deep sorrow, and it’s only natural. It seems odd to leap cheerfully into a fresh life without some sadness. I’ve been captivated by acting since I was 12 years old, and everything beyond the stage – that beacon of light – has always felt like darkness to me.
At the National Board of Review Awards held in January, actor Daniel Day-Lewis reconnected with director Martin Scorsese from their “Gangs of New York” project. During this reunion, Scorsese subtly suggested that Day-Lewis might be making a comeback to the film industry.
Martin Scorsese expressed his feelings during the acceptance of his directing awards for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, stating that working on two films with them was not only a privilege, but also one of the most memorable experiences in his life.
“Maybe there’s time for one more,” he mused.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “Anemone,” directed by Ben Fordesman, who previously worked on the captivating film “Love Lies Bleeding.” The production team has also announced some exciting talents joining the crew: Jane Petrie, renowned for her work on “The Crown,” will be handling the costume design, while Chris Oddy, known for his impressive work on “Zone of Interest,” will take on the role of the production designer. I can hardly wait to see this cinematic masterpiece unfold!
There’s some uncertainty about whether Day-Lewis intends to take on more acting roles in the future. We couldn’t get hold of a representative for additional information on Wednesday.
