Daniel Craig’s “extraordinary” drama with Lesley Manville is a must-see on TV tonight

Don’t miss the critically acclaimed drama Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Lesley Manville, which airs tonight, February 10th. Directed by a celebrated filmmaker and nominated for numerous awards, it’s a must-see.

The 2024 film, adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985 book of the same name, stars James Bond actor Daniel Craig as William Lee. The story follows Lee’s journey to Mexico City, where he develops a strong attraction to Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.

The new romantic drama is directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. It features a strong supporting cast, including Jason Schwartzman (known for Asteroid City), David Lowery, and Omar Apollo.

The film Queer will be shown on BBC Two tonight at 11pm, after a cinema release and streaming on Mubi. It’s expected to become available on BBC iPlayer shortly after the broadcast, though this hasn’t been officially announced.

Although the movie didn’t do well in theaters, critics generally liked it, giving it a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 245 reviews. Daniel Craig’s acting received a lot of positive attention, but opinions on the story itself were divided.

Craig handles the emotional complexity of the role brilliantly, delivering what The Financial Times calls his best performance yet. It’s refreshing to see him so relaxed and natural after playing the controlled character of James Bond for 15 years.

According to the Associated Press, Craig carries the entire show, and he’s captivating – a charming figure with a fedora and even a bit of dirt on his pants. Rolling Stone described it as beautifully messy and truly exceptional.

While Empire Magazine found the film to be a somewhat uneven experience, they described it as a melancholic and intense look at desire. They noted that its lack of a clear direction held it back, but praised Daniel Craig’s performance as particularly captivating.

Craig received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his acting, and he previously discussed the movie’s themes in an interview with Digital Spy.

He explained that the book’s unfinished state creates a specific effect. The feeling of emptiness and uncertainty it leaves you with at the end is intentional – he wants readers to feel that sense of ‘What happens now?’
