Daniel Craig wanted Queer sex scenes to feel “real and natural”

In a candid discussion, Daniel Craig revealed the motivation behind the sex scenes in the movie “Queer”. He aimed to make these moments appear authentic and genuine.

In the forthcoming movie, Luca Guadagnino serves as the director (known for “Call Me By Your Name”, “Bones and All”, and “Challengers”); it features Timothée Chalamet portraying William Lee, an American expatriate who develops a romantic relationship with a younger man, Eugene Allerton (played by Drew Starkey), while both are in Mexico City during the 1950s.

On the very day of its global debut at the Venice International Film Festival (3rd of September), Craig shared his thoughts with the media regarding Guadagnino’s upcoming romance-drama, emphasizing that the team behind the camera had a specific approach when capturing the intimate scenes in the movie.

Craig explained, “Just like you, I understand that shooting a love scene in a movie doesn’t equate to an intimate moment. In fact, there’s usually a crowd of people observing. However, our goal was to create something deeply emotional, authentic, and genuine.” (paraphrased from Variety)

Drew is an exceptional, terrific, and captivating actor to collaborate with. We shared some laughter – we aimed to keep it enjoyable,” said the actor, who has featured in the James Bond series and Knives Out productions.

Craig additionally discussed his involvement with the production of “Queer“, reminiscing: “Craig and Guadagnino first crossed paths 20 years ago, expressing mutual interest in collaboration. It took us that long to actually make it happen. If I hadn’t been part of this movie, and if I saw this movie, I would have wanted to be a part of it. It’s the kind of film I aspire to watch and produce – I want it to exist in the world.”

Beyond the two main actors, the cast for the movie “Queer” also features Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege and Ariel Schulman. Justin Kuritzkes, who previously worked with Guadagnino on “Challengers“, is responsible for adapting William S Burroughs’ 1985 novel for the screen.

The film titled “Queer” does not have a confirmed release date yet, but it is set to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th and the New York Film Festival on October 6th.
