Daniel Craig looks comfy in a cable knit sweater and SLIPPERS at event for racy new film Queer in NYC – after making candid James Bond confession
As I delve into the captivating life story of Daniel Craig, a man who has graced our screens as James Bond for over a decade, I find myself utterly mesmerized by his journey. His transformation from a reluctant Bond to an accomplished actor is nothing short of remarkable.
On a Friday evening, Daniel Craig casually wore slippers while attending the event called “An Evening with Daniel Craig” held at BAM Howard in New York City.
56-year-old actor from James Bond films, casually promoting his latest steamy movie titled “Queer,” opted for a chic and cozy look, wearing a gray cable knit sweater paired with sleepwear-inspired footwear.
He finished off his relaxed outfit, consisting of jeans, with a sweep of his long, golden hair away from his attractive features.
Onstage, Daniel had a lively conversation with American theater critic Hilton Als, discussing his recent major film role with evident enthusiasm.
In the highly anticipated movie directed by Luca Guadagnino, based on William Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novella, he co-stars with Drew Starkey who is 31 years old.
In the 1950s-set romantic drama, an American ex-pat and former soldier named William Lee (portrayed by Craig) finds himself entangled in a love affair with Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a troubled young man with a history of drug addiction and dismissal from the Navy. This story unfolds in the vibrant cityscape of Mexico City.
The movie features intense, passionate moments between the two performers. Daniel commented on this to Variety, saying, “To work together effectively, you must set aside personal pride and simply let go. There are no strict guidelines.
After Daniel admitted that he wrote numerous lines for Bond’s 2008 film, Quantum of Solace, and acknowledged that the movie, unfortunately, didn’t quite hit the mark.
He reminisced his time on set but bluntly admitted it was a ‘f***ing nightmare’ – as they were short of writers and production started without a script.
On The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast, the Knives Out actor expressed: ‘Making a second film can be quite challenging – absolutely dreadful experience.’
Paul Haggis reviewed the script, then left to participate in a picket line, leaving us without screenwriters.
It would have been wiser not to initiate the production process, as it turns out I wrote quite a bit for that movie, a fact I’d rather keep private. [This version maintains the original sentiment but is written in a more conversational and modern style.]
The English actor went on to say, “The film features some truly spectacular stunts, however, it ultimately fell short.
‘In the movie, there was no engaging narrative – it taught us something important; beginning a film without a script isn’t wise.’
In that very same conversation, the actor shared an interesting detail: Initially, he turned down the offer to portray James Bond because he was apprehensive it might restrict other acting roles available to him within the film industry.
As the one who stepped into the role of 007 across five films, from Casino Royale in 2006 up to No Time To Die in 2021, I must admit that I harbored some doubts when considering the part of this iconic secret agent.
When asked if he felt anxious about taking on the Bond role, Daniel confessed: “Indeed, absolutely. In fact, I declined it initially – to put it simply, I said ‘no’.
At that moment, since there was no script available, my overconfidence seemed incredible. Yet, all I could say was, ‘Until I review the script, I can’t possibly take a call on it.’
It was indeed the very same fear, as you mentioned, regarding that entity and numerous others, about how drastically it could alter my existence.
At that point, I was comfortably earning a decent income, and if I had continued with what I was doing, I would have found contentment beyond measure.
‘But it was really one of those things where – I mean to be typecast as James Bond? Boo-hoo.’
Between James Bond films, Daniel opted for various other movie roles like Defiance and Cowboys & Aliens. However, he admitted that his efforts to demonstrate his acting range led him feeling exhausted.
He shared: “Over time, I believed I needed to demonstrate my worth, but eventually, I recognized that I no longer possessed the stamina for it.
‘It’s not knocking movies like ‘Defiance’, because I’m very proud of them.
When engaged in this role, Bond essentially consumes your life. Each film represents approximately two years of your personal time, with extended absences from home totaling over half a year. The notion of accommodating another actor due to the pressure to demonstrate versatility to the world seems ludicrous, which is why I chose to step away from that practice.
Among the films I worked on, there are a few I took great pride in. However, they left me quite drained during production. In retrospect, it seemed wiser for me to focus primarily on the Bond series instead.
