Daniel Craig is tipped for Oscar glory for his ‘brilliant and explicit’ role as a man drawn into a same-sex romance in Queer ahead of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival
As a dedicated Bond enthusiast, I must say that Daniel Craig’s transformation from 007 to a complex character in “Queer” is nothing short of extraordinary! With a career spanning over three decades and a multitude of roles under his belt, Craig has finally stepped out of the shadow of James Bond and into the limelight as an artist.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must say that the upcoming debut of “Queer” at the Venice Film Festival has been generating quite a buzz, with many Bond enthusiasts finding themselves in a bit of a tizzy over Daniel Craig’s raw and intense portrayal of gay relationships. The whispers and speculation surrounding these graphic scenes are creating quite the flutter at the Lido, adding an extra dash of excitement to the premiere on Tuesday.
In the movie, five times featuring Daniel Craig as 007, is helmed by acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino.
The story is centered around the character of William Lee, played by Craig, who is an American expat and former war veteran, as portrayed in William Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novella. This narrative explores Lee’s passionate relationship with a younger man, Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), who happens to be a drug addict and ex-Navy serviceman.
Initially, Allerton resists Lee’s advances, but later gives in. A candid moment is portrayed where Craig performs oral sex.
I’m told: ‘It’s a long way from Bond, and very explicit. Craig is brilliant in the film.’
Alberto Barbera, head of the Venice Film Festival, expressed his conviction that Craig delivers an exceptional, career-defining performance in the film ‘Queer’. He also hinted that it would come as a surprise if Craig doesn’t receive a nomination at the Academy Awards next year.
Barbera told a journalist that Craig had ‘a couple of sex scenes that are quite full-on’.
During an interview, Guadagnino stated that “Queer” would be his most intimate film. It serves as a homage to Powell and Pressburger.
As a devoted admirer of The Red Shoes, I’ve had the pleasure of watching it no less than 50 times. I believe that if they were here today, they might find the abundant and daring sex scenes in Queer particularly intriguing.
The novel was composed from 1951 to 1953, however, it wasn’t released until 1985. A significant portion of it was penned following the death of Burroughs’ wife, Joan Vollmer, who he accidentally killed during a drinking session in Mexico City.
At the moment, their young son who is four years old, was present in the room. As stated by Burroughs, he was attempting to reenact the William Tell scenario by shooting a glass from her head, but later he amended his statement, claiming that the firearm accidentally malfunctioned instead.
He was convicted of manslaughter in his absence, after fleeing to the US.
Craig, 56, lives mostly in New York these days with actress Rachel Weisz and their young daughter.
He has acted for more 30 years, but never received an Oscar nomination.
As well as the Bond films, he has appeared in Layer Cake and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Filming has been completed for Wake Up, Dead Man – the latest addition to the highly successful Knives Out franchise.
Italian Guadagnino, 53, is known for Call Me By Your Name, Challengers and Bones And All.
