Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman’s forgotten thriller remake gets new UK streaming home

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the long-forgotten thriller remake starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, previously known as “The Invasion“, has secured a new streaming platform for viewing.

According to Jack Finney’s 1955 novel “The Body Snatchers”, the movie tells the story of Nicole Kidman portraying Dr. Carol Bennell, a psychiatrist who is among the first to observe a peculiar contagion affecting humanity, causing unusual behavior changes.

A psychiatrist based in Washington DC uncovers that the source of the epidemic is alien. In order to safeguard her son, who might possess the solution to halt the increasing invasion, she must struggle against it.

In this production, Daniel Craig, known for his role as James Bond, plays Dr. Ben Driscol, a friend of the main character Carol. They are joined on set by actors Jeremy Northam, Jeffrey Wright, Veronica Cartwright, Celia Weston, and Josef Sommer.

The movie titled “The Invasion” was the fourth cinematic interpretation of Finney’s novels, following in the footsteps of Don Siegel’s 1956 movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers“, Philip Kaufman’s 1978 film with the same title, and Abel Ferrara’s 1993 production called “Body Snatchers“.

In 2007, the sci-fi thriller movie directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel was made available for streaming on Prime Video in both the UK and Ireland, allowing science fiction enthusiasts to watch the remake online immediately.

When it initially came out, many reviewers gave the film negative feedback. At present, it has a rating of merely 20% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 164 critiques.

The article from Slate states, “It fails significantly as a compelling science fiction thriller,” and also hints at its intentional political commentary.

According to The New York Post, Nicole Kidman’s character has a hard time staying awake, much like the viewers might, and Variety described The Invasion as a polished yet unmemorable, character-lacking suspense film.

In a fresh perspective, some movie critics have reevaluated the film titled “The Invasion,” with Cinema Crazed penning in 2024: “This film seems surprisingly relevant 17 years after its initial release. The suspense it offers during a contemporary viewing is compelling enough to warrant another watch, or even a first-time view.

In 2021, the Nashville Scene stated that this film was largely overlooked in 2007, yet it seems incredibly relevant now, and it appears as if it was a prescient prediction, albeit one that is sharp and chilling.

The Invasion is now available to watch on Prime Video.
