Daniel Craig and Cillian Murphy Eye Damien Chazelle’s Next Prison Drama
Following Damien Chazelle’s 2022 movie “Babylon” underperforming at the box office, there was some doubt about his next venture. Earlier this year, it was speculated that he would be working on a biopic of stuntman Evel Knievel, but recent updates suggest a change in direction for Chazelle. Instead, his upcoming film will tell an entirely new story, with the news also hinting at two well-known actors expressing interest in the project.
Although the title and plot details of Chazelle’s upcoming movie remain undisclosed, Deadline reveals that it will be a drama set within a prison. As per the reports, negotiations are underway with Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig for leading roles in the film, although no final agreement has been reached as of yet. Notably, Murphy gained increased recognition following his Best Actor Oscar win for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” while Craig is set to appear next in Rian Johnson’s third murder mystery movie titled “Wake Up Dead Man.
According to Deadline, Chazelle has penned the script for an upcoming movie and will collaborate with Olivia Hamilton in producing it under the Wild Chickens Productions label. At this point, there isn’t much information available about the production, but it’s intriguing to observe that Chazelle has been considering various projects to decide on his next film. After the financial disappointment of Babylon, a drug-centric tribute to Hollywood’s silent film era, it makes sense that the director is being cautious about what he chooses to work on next.
Damien Chazelle’s Next Film Could Be a Smaller Production
The unexpected aspect of the recent news is that the upcoming movie deviates significantly from earlier reports. Contrary to previous assumptions, it appears that Damien Chazelle won’t be collaborating with Leonardo DiCaprio on an Evel Knievel biopic as initially thought. Instead, Deadline’s report indicates that the Evel Knievel project has been delayed, freeing up Chazelle to focus on a new venture that he seems equally invested in.
Chazelle’s recent films, “First Man” and “Babylon,” didn’t perform well at the box office, suggesting that his next project might be a more low-key production compared to “Babylon.” However, the director has consistently worked with top-tier talent, having collaborated with actors like Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt in his five feature films. The addition of Murphy and Craig could spark a fresh, engaging collaboration for Chazelle as he ventures back into mid-budget films with this new prison-set drama.
It’s been three years since Chazelle’s last film, so it’ll be thrilling to discover what he has in store for this upcoming project. Although it seems like the stuntman-focused movie with DiCaprio might have been delayed temporarily, it’s comforting to know that Chazelle has been working on multiple projects he feels ready to direct. If Murphy and Craig secure their roles for the film, Chazelle’s next project could potentially be his most impressive yet, given the exceptional talent involved.
