As a seasoned MMA fan with years of watching and analyzing fights under my belt, I find myself shaking my head at Merab Dvalishvili‘s latest social media post. I understand that he’s excited about his upcoming fight against Sean O’Malley, but revealing a training injury on social media just seems like a rookie mistake.
On a Tuesday afternoon, Merab Dvalishvili posted a video of himself being sewn up due to a wound he received during sparring. This injury occurs as he prepares for his upcoming fight against UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, which is scheduled soon. Typically, such injuries would be kept concealed for various reasons, and Dana White, the president of the UFC, isn’t pleased that the top contender chose to share it on social media platforms.
White commented during the DWCS Week 2 post-fight press conference that “Everyone is aware of Merab’s cut,” he said. “He shared it himself. Our guys are remarkably foolish, almost unbelievably so. All the things I discuss about boxing, what I plan to bring to boxing, is when something happens in training, let me tell you, it doesn’t get leaked. Our people can’t help but rush to post it on social media. It’s just a small cut. It’s not a big deal. But evidently, it needed to be shared.”
Dana White calls Merab ‘next-level stupid’ ahead of UFC 306
One major issue White has with the video is that it reveals a possible vulnerability or an opening for O’Malley to gain advantage in the fight. “… Why on earth would you want him to be aware of that? It’s beyond foolish. Some people are so foolish, it’s hard to comprehend. It’s unbelievable.”
To clarify, neither White nor Dvalishvili appeared concerned that he wouldn’t make it to the fight. On Instagram, Dvalishvili posted, “Don’t worry – everything’s fine, just a minor training injury.” He added, “I’ve never backed out of a fight and I won’t start now! I’m ready for you, O’Malley – stronger than ever, let’s do this!”
Dvalishvili responded to White’s critique by sharing a video, claiming it was his third workout of the day, taken at the gym. The upcoming UFC 306 (also known as UFC Noche) is scheduled for September 14th at The Sphere in Las Vegas and is anticipated to be one of the costliest UFC events ever held.
