Be warned, this review contains spoilers for the show Big Mistakes! Netflix’s Big Mistakes is a hilarious take on the crime comedy genre. Created by Dan Levy (of Schitt’s Creek) and Rachel Sennott, the show features the typical elements you’d expect – chaos, violence, and a tough criminal underworld – but with a strong comedic twist. The characters played by Dan Levy and Taylor Ortega are completely out of their depth in this world, leading to some incredibly funny and disastrous situations.
I think what really sets Big Mistakes apart is how much it reminds me of Schitt’s Creek. It’s clear the creator, Dan Levy, took what worked so well in that show and brought it here. Schitt’s Creek was funny because of the situation, sure, but it was the Rose family – how messed up but loving they were – that really grabbed us. That’s exactly what Big Mistakes does too; it’s all about a family you can’t help but root for, even when they’re making, well, big mistakes!
As a big fan of both Schitt’s Creek and Big Mistakes, I’ve noticed something really interesting. Dan Levy seems to have subtly carried over a winning formula from one show to the other – shorter episodes and a generally lighter touch with the storytelling. Now, you might think that wouldn’t work for a gritty crime show, but it actually adds to the tension in a cool way. Throw in some genuinely heartwarming moments and themes that really resonate, and it feels like this approach could be a huge hit for Netflix. It’s a surprisingly effective combination!
Big Mistakes’ Formula Opens The Door For A New Era Of Netflix Crime Comedies
Crime comedies are usually entertaining, but they often fall into familiar patterns. We’ve seen the story of ordinary people getting mixed up with criminals many times before. While Netflix has a good selection of these shows, it’s becoming difficult to find truly original ones. Big Mistakes doesn’t completely reinvent the genre, as it uses some common elements. However, it does offer a new approach to the way these stories are told, changing the typical formula and exploring different themes.
The Netflix series Big Mistakes shows that crime comedies can be funny and engaging without needing complex plots. Despite avoiding confusing twists and turns, the show still delivered a satisfying ending. Instead of relying on silly physical humor, Big Mistakes found its comedy in the chaotic dynamics of its family and how they dealt with the criminal situations they found themselves in, and their constant annoyance with one another.
Ultimately, Big Mistakes strikes a fantastic balance between being hilariously over-the-top and genuinely heartwarming – a quality it clearly learned from Schitt’s Creek. Dan Levy’s character, Nicky, goes through a compelling emotional journey dealing with a secret relationship and his own conscience. Jenna Ortega’s Morgan is flawed and complicated, but we gradually see that her insecurities aren’t justified. The show also cleverly satirizes modern politics through the mother’s mayoral campaign. This subtle depth is exactly what Big Mistakes needs to build a dedicated audience on Netflix if it continues on its current path.
Will There Be A Big Mistakes Season 2?
For the new crime comedy Big Mistakes to really succeed on Netflix, it needs to be renewed for more than just one season. The first season ended with a major cliffhanger, suggesting the creators are hoping for a longer run. Plus, the show’s short episode format is similar to Schitt’s Creek, which often has multiple seasons. Ultimately, whether Big Mistakes gets a second season is up to Netflix.
The new series Big Mistakes is receiving rave reviews, with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is currently the fourth most popular show on Netflix. Creator Levy has hinted at larger plans for the story, and a second season seems likely if enough people continue to watch. If the show is renewed, we can also expect to see more similar crime comedies – ones with quick episodes, complicated families, and a lot of emotional depth – coming soon.
