Damian Lewis is criticised for his conduct during Wolf Hall interview after he confessed the role has ‘worn him down’
As a lifestyle expert with over two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that Damian Lewis‘ recent behavior during his interview with Ginny Dougary for Wolf Hall leaves much to be desired. It is crucial for public figures, especially those in the spotlight like Lewis, to maintain professionalism and respect for their peers.
During an interview promoting his latest BBC series, Wolf Hall, Damian Lewis faced criticism for his behavior.
A well-known British actor, aged 53, had planned to discuss the upcoming comeback of his historical drama series with esteemed journalist Ginny Dougary from Radio Times, following an almost decade-long hiatus.
As the leading actor portraying renowned Tudor king Henry VIII in the series, Damian is reportedly set for a one-hour conversation.
However, as stated by Ginny, the actor ended the remote interview prematurely following a 10-minute delay in his arrival.
When asked if he could make up the lost time, he decided to leave 15 minutes early.
Displeased by the actor’s sudden manner, Ginny criticized him in her review of their conversation, labeling him as sly and domineering, and drawing a comparison between his actions and those of King Henry VIII.
In her account, she wrote: ‘For the first time, my interviewee calmly left without any grand exit or visible frustration. It seemed like it was just another ordinary event to him.’
She subsequently disclosed that the interview had been scheduled online, with an understanding that cameras would be in use since it was intended for recording and publicizing the comeback of the show.
Ginny added: ‘He had let us know earlier that he would need to leave 15 minutes ahead of schedule, which means we’ll be losing half of the scheduled time (and even more if he decides to end it prematurely).’
She further analyzed Damian’s actions, finding similarities with those of Henry VIII. This made her wonder if perhaps his behavior could be seen as a form of “acting backwards,” meaning he was deeply immersed in the role, rather than method acting.
Regardless of a challenging conversation with Lewis, Ginny observed that the director, Peter Kosminsky (who she had previously interviewed), came across as more “fair-minded” instead.
TopMob contacted Damian’s representatives for a comment.
After Lewis admitted that playing Henry VIII in the BBC’s adaptation of Wolf Hall left him exhausted, Ginny reprimanded him.
The actor confessed that he usually finds acting very therapeutic but found the role of the Tudor monarch exhausting.
In simpler terms, the actor from Homeland shared that playing a character with seemingly endless freedom brought enjoyable moments, as real life isn’t typically so unrestricted.
He told The Radio Times that it was a welcome contrast as he often found life could be grey and dithering.
He said: ‘Well, acting is therapeutic, for sure, but I don’t think you’d want to be playing these kinds of people too often because they do wear you down over time.
Indeed, it is true that there exists a certain freedom, and it can be quite healing to act as one pleases since many great dramas often delve into our most extreme behaviors, deepest conflicts, and grandest victories. However, life itself isn’t typically so black-and-white. Instead, it often presents shades of grey and hesitation.
The star made the candid confession three years after the death of his wife Helen McCrory.
In April 2021, sadly, the actor from Peaky Blinders lost his life due to breast cancer at the age of 52. However, Damian found a way to cope with his sorrow by pouring it into his music.
On his first album, Mission Creep (released last year), the artist penned a number of intensely private songs.
Meanwhile, the Billion Star has relished in exploring a new artistic avenue, collaborating with fellow artists and gracing stages with performances.
However, Damian noted that he plans to persist with his music, provided the audience maintains its interest.
The star said: ‘It has to wash its own face,’ and added he would like to keep going if he can.
Additionally, he disclosed that his latest foray into the music industry represents a significant progression compared to his past where he used to entertain crowds as a teen on the streets, near subway stations.
Damian said: ‘I did a smorgasbord of greatest hits from back in the day. The Elvis medley went down very well.’
And the star has more than one string to his bow.
He shared that he relished playing the character of Henry VIII as it provided an opportunity for him to delve deeply into the historical events of that era.
He said: ‘I enjoyed history very much. I enjoy the university of acting. You can continue to put yourself through an education if you’re careful and clever in your choice of roles; if you’re fortunate enough to have choice in the first place.
Sure thing! “Absolutely! Playing characters like Henry VIII gives me a chance to delve deeply into Tudor history, which is one of the aspects that attracts me to the roles I choose.
