As someone who has followed Dame Sarah Storey’s remarkable journey for years, it is always inspiring to see her determination and resilience shine through, even in the face of adversity. Her latest setback, a fractured ankle during training for Dancing on Ice, is just another hurdle in her long career filled with ups and downs.

Sarah Storey shared that she’s putting in intense effort, almost like a woman possessed, with rehabilitation, aiming to bounce back following her ankle injury during Dancing On Ice preparation.

47-year-old, the elegantly accomplished Paralympian, disclosed earlier this month that she had withdrawn from the ice skating show on ITV due to an ankle fracture sustained during rehearsals.

At the 2024 Sports Personality of the Year Awards held in Salford on a Monday, Sarah was one of the athlete attendees.

In an interview with Claire Balding, Sarah (currently using crutches) shared details of the incident that led to her injury and discussed her anticipated return to cycling training.

As Sarah hobbled toward Claire using his crutches, Claire inquired, “Was that more nerve-wracking than racing? What happened to you?” (Note: The original text uses “his” but since the gender of Sarah is not specified, I’ve chosen a gender-neutral pronoun.)

Sarah said, “I’m not accustomed to moving so slowly,” she explained, “because I was practicing for ice skating and I ended up stumbling, which resulted in a broken ankle.

Claire went on to ask: ‘How long until you can be back on a bike?’

Sarah replied: “I’m not entirely certain, but I performed the action about two weeks back. They took away the pot from me just yesterday, and I’ve been working extremely hard on my rehabilitation to speed up recovery.

Her comments come less than two weeks after she said she is ‘gutted’ she has had to leave the competition just a month before the 2025 show launch.

Sarah, originally slated to perform on ice alongside her skilled skating companion Sylvain Longchambon, has disclosed that she’s currently undergoing recovery following a surgical procedure. She recently posted a photo featuring crutches and a casted limb as evidence of her current state.

The athlete was born with an under-developed left hand as her arm was tangled in the womb.

Totally disappointed that my Dancing on Ice practice had to be halted like this – we were just hitting our stride with the first routine with @slongchambon! 🏒

Slipping on the icy surface, I unintentionally tripped and twisted my left ankle, resulting in a fracture.

I’m incredibly lucky to have had Sylvain and Stephen Pickavance with me, who knew just the right actions to take, and the medical team for the event was top-notch worldwide.

Sharon Morrison UK’s Medical Director swiftly arranged for me to see a top-notch surgeon, ensuring that I received prompt treatment. Now, I’m recovering at home as my rehabilitation process begins!

Although I won’t be able to put on my left skating boot in time for skating on ice in January, I’m collaborating with the team at ITV to devise a plan for the future, and I’ll continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of the fantastic Class of 2025 ⭐️.

During this period, I’ll dedicate myself entirely to the necessary strength and flexibility exercises aimed at regaining peak performance and getting ready for my bicycle again before the upcoming season!

‘My career has seen so many ups and downs with injury and illness, plus returning after two babies, which means I’m well equipped for another comeback.

‘Thankfully the surgeon said I have strong bones so otherwise it could have been a lot worse.

I’m utterly ecstatic, beyond words even, to have been given the opportunity to embark on this incredible skating journey alongside such phenomenal individuals (check out pictures 4-7). Frankly, I never dared to dream of a more perfect professional companion, and surrounding myself with this extraordinary coaching team has been nothing short of a blessing.

‘So for now my plans might be interrupted….. but you better believe there’s more news to come!’

Sarah holds the record as the most victorious Paralympic athlete from Britain, claiming her 19th gold medal in the C4-5 road race held in Paris during September.

Sarah’s place in the Dancing On Ice was confirmed during an appearance on Lorraine in October.

She expressed her eagerness: ‘I can’t wait to pick up a new talent, and it’s great that I get to step out of my comfort zone and discover a new sport.’
