Dame Mary Berry Defies Odds to Thrive at 90—You Won’t Believe Her New Favorite Sport!
In simpler terms, when Dame Mary Berry sustained a hip fracture from gardening, the doctors warned that if she didn’t start incorporating regular exercise into her routine, her life could be at risk within the next four years.
Four years after the injury, these photos illustrate that the chef has not slowed down; instead, she’s thriving due to her continued passion for croquet.
Although humorously stating that she’s not particularly skilled at it, Dame Mary—celebrating her 90th birthday this month—was observed playing the sport with companions, close to her residence in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
With a white, cushioned coat and a pair of comfy sneakers on, the previous Bake Off contestant stood focused, skillfully handling her hammer.

Previously, she shared that she began playing the refined game alongside her husband, Paul Hunnings, who at 92 years old, she acknowledges, excels over her.
Mary shared that the couple learned from a delightful Finnish woman, and discovering this shared interest brought them much happiness.
She mentioned that croquet is ideal for our age group, explaining that we engage in it for about two hours, and by the end, he feels tired (or exhausted), but following a short rest, he regains his energy.
Dame Mary was picking sweet peas in her garden in August 2021 when she tripped.
She spent three and a half hours waiting for an ambulance before undergoing hip surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, located in Reading.

In the coming year, she was informed by her doctor: ‘You have two choices. One is to remain seated without any exercise, which might lead to your demise within four years. Alternatively, you could get moving, even uphill, and make every effort to recover fully, and this would take approximately 18 months.’
Indeed, she was correct. After working out and undergoing physical therapy, it’s not completely back to normal just yet, but it should get there soon.
Dame Mary also recently revealed that she plays tennis every week – as long as it’s sunny.
In the words of her ex-co-host on The Great British Bake Off, Mel Giedroyc, “She isn’t a sweet elderly woman; she’s as tough as antique leather boots.
