Dame Judi Dench breaks down in tears over death of late husband as Jay Blades scrambles to console her on Channel 4 series The Odd Couple

As someone who has had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary bond between individuals like Jay Blades and Dame Judi Dench, I am truly moved by their heartwarming friendship and the emotional journey they shared during The Odd Couple. The poignant moments of Judi returning to her old home where she lived with her late husband Michael Williams brought a wave of emotions that only someone who has experienced the profound impact of loss can truly understand.

On the TV program “The Odd Couple,” host Jay Blades expressed solidarity with his unexpected friend, Dame Judi Dench, when she became emotional during their broadcast.

At the age of 89, the actress appeared deeply moved, visibly dabbing away tears, as she was reminded of her deceased spouse, Michael Williams, by a flood of memories.

In 1971, Judi tied the knot with an actor, and a year after that, they were blessed with their daughter, Finty, who is now 51 years old.

In 2001, regrettably, Michael passed away at the age of 65. During the latest episode, Judi guided Jay through a house they once shared with Michael and their daughter Finty during the 70s and 80s.

During the episode, Judi said: ‘I want to take Jay to see my old home in the village of Charlecote but having not been back since leaving in 1984… this isn’t going to be easy.’

As Jay and Judi pulled up to the house, Judi said: ‘Oh, oh, this is a strange feeling.’

Seeing the sight of her former home, Judi sighed ‘my word’ and appeared slightly uneasy.

In the scene that followed, the actress appeared deeply moved, showing clear signs of emotion, and tightly grasped her shawl while seated beside The Repair Shop’s prominent figure.

With tears filling her eyes, the James Bond star confessed: ‘Ok, this is hard.’

Jay extended his hand to comfort Judi, making sure she was alright, since it seemed memories of her deceased spouse were overwhelming her.

Discussing her former home, Judi said: ‘It holds a lot of memories, oh my goodness me!’

‘It’s very strange.’

Judi’s late husband Michael sadly passed from lung cancer leaving the actress heartbroken.

Despite currently being involved with David Mills since 2010, she has openly acknowledged that she hasn’t fully moved on from the passing of Michael, a sentiment she still holds.

In a 2020 interview with David Tennant, she also revealed that she would ‘never get over’ him.

Judi encountered Michael during a theater performance where they both got casted, however, it was disclosed a couple of years back that he wasn’t the sole actor she developed feelings for on stage.

Legendary actress has pondered over her tendency to develop feelings for her fellow theater performers, admitting she was captivated by her Hamlet co-star John Neville on stage.

At a gathering held at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End back in 2022, Judi reminisced about their past association in 1958 as a ‘wonderful’ phase.

According to Richard Eden from Daily Mail, the legendary star expressed that they were performing Hamlet alongside John Neville. He found him captivating, and the experience was equally enchanting.

When asked if she had fallen in love with Neville, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, she affirmatively responded, saying, “Yes, I tend to easily fall in love. I’m quite vulnerable.”

Occasionally, it’s not something extreme, but it might be a hint of stage fright that can be quite thrilling.
