As someone who’s spent years observing beauty trends, I find it endlessly fascinating when icons defy expectations! Dame Helen Mirren is a perfect example. While L’Oreal pays her handsomely to be the face of their Age Perfect hair dye, she actually prefers embracing her natural color. It just goes to show, true confidence comes from being comfortable in your own skin – silver strands and all!
The 80-year-old Academy Award winner playfully said she doesn’t consider herself brave, just someone who doesn’t feel like making an effort when it comes to her personal style.
Helen, known for her stylish white bob haircut, recently said she doesn’t dye her hair because she simply can’t be bothered with the effort.
It’s not about being courageous, I just don’t really care. I’ve always been blonde, and my hair naturally lightens to this shade in the sun anyway.
‘It would go sort of white. So I just slowly went whiter and whiter.’
Dame Helen has previously voiced suspicions about beauty products such as moisturisers.

She added: ‘When I put my moisturiser on it probably does f*** all, but it makes me feel better.’
In 2023, she challenged the idea that women of a certain age shouldn’t have long hair, after she herself started growing hers out.
The actress revealed a dramatically different appearance while promoting her role as the villain Hespera in the movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Okay, so she grew out her hair during lockdown – can you believe it?! She basically said she just didn’t have the energy to cut it, and now she’s thinking of keeping it long for a while! I’m honestly living for it, it looks amazing and I’m so glad she decided to just let it grow!
On the Lorraine show, Helen challenged the idea that older women shouldn’t have long hair, explaining that it’s a common misconception that hair naturally thins with age.
She said: ‘You’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age.
I started growing my hair out during the COVID pandemic, something I hadn’t done since my twenties. It just kept getting longer, and honestly, I didn’t feel like getting it cut.
I decided to give it a bit more time. I figured it would fade eventually, but I was actually having fun with it – it was surprisingly different and exciting.

Helen shared that she embraces being a role model for women over 60, explaining that life, creativity, passion, and energy shouldn’t diminish with age – unless you choose to let them.
The key is to stay motivated and persistent, and to find joy in life whenever you can.
Helen has often spoken out against unrealistic beauty expectations for older women, believing her generation has faced ageism for too long.
In a 2019 interview with Grazia, she expressed frustration with the beauty industry’s practice of marketing products on the faces of very young girls, saying it’s particularly irritating to her generation and those that followed.
