Dame Emma Thompson Stuns in Baroque Wig and Feathered Mask at Venice Carnival

Emma Thompson truly embraced the grandeur of the Venice Carnival by wearing an elaborate costume from that era.

65-year-old British actress and scriptwriter drew attention in the Italian city, famed for its ornate masks, resplendent attire, and lively celebrations, during the festival.

Emma stepped out with her husband Greg Wise, who also got into the spirit of the festival. 

In a striking ensemble, the actress from Love Actually wore a grand, corseted dress in shades of red, white, and gold, accessorized with a purse to match and a flowing white cloak.

She donned a white Baroque-style wig and, furthermore, accessorized with a golden theatrical mask adorned with cream and pastel pink plumes.

Emma completed her elaborate outfit by adding a pair of delicate white lace gloves, stylish gold platform shoes, and a small red choker around her neck.

In the festivities, Greg, her husband who’s an actor and movie producer, aged 58, added to the enjoyment by wearing a stylish cream coat with a Baroque Venetian jacquard pattern.

He matched his jacket with a shirt featuring a black ruffled collar, knee-length grey satin trousers, black stockings, and ornate loafers in the Baroque style.

Greg also wore a white period wig to complete his ensemble, as well as a bejewelled hat.

They stood for a photo on one of the city’s famous bridges, and also paused to snap pictures with admirers.

Every year, prior to Lent, the vibrant Venice Carnival takes place, starting exactly two weeks before Ash Wednesday and concluding on Shrove Tuesday.

The carnival, as stated on its official site, originated in the 11th century and continued for a span of two months filled with festivities. However, over time, it began to wane in popularity during the 18th century.

1979 saw its rebirth, and today, people wearing masks while celebrating, roaming around Venice, and relishing live music have become an annual tradition in Venice.

The event was revitalized in 1979, and now it’s common to see masked revelers enjoying live music and strolling through the streets of Venice year after year.

After Emma expressed her belief that men have a greater likelihood of success in the film industry due to the perception that women are not permitted to fail, it was subsequently noticed that she appeared afterward. Recently, Emma made her initial appearance on the filming location of the forthcoming Apple TV+ show, Down Cemetery Road. She assumed the role of private investigator Zoë Boehm during this visit.
