Dame Emma Thompson criticises the film industry for ‘not allowing women to fail’ while ‘men fail time and again, yet still get work’ – as she promotes harrowing new documentary Mediha
As a dedicated follower of Emma Thompson’s illustrious career, I find her insights into the film industry particularly enlightening. Her experiences spanning over three decades have given her a unique perspective that is hard to ignore. The notion that women are not allowed to fail while men can continue to try and falter is disheartening, yet it rings true in many aspects of our society.
As a committed enthusiast, I firmly believe that there’s a greater probability for men to thrive in the cinematic world due to the unspoken rule that seems to dictate women must not falter.
Ever since I first laid eyes on her in the captivating 1987 TV series, Tutti Frutti and Fortunes Of War, I’ve been a devoted admirer of this illustrious actress. Her stage and screen presence has left an indelible mark on me, and it’s been a privilege to witness her glorious career unfold over the years.
However, at 65 years old, Thompson expresses concern about insufficient backing and visibility for women’s perspectives in the movie business.
She expressed her hope that the film industry would encourage more opportunities for women to attempt projects, even if they don’t succeed on their first try.
‘Men can fail time and again, yet they still get work, I just don’t understand it. Women fail once and then it’s, “oh well you don’t get to do this again”. That would be good.’
As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to lend my voice in support of the powerful documentary, Mediha, directed by Hasan Oswald. This film tells the heart-wrenching story of Mediha Ibrahim Alhamad, a 10-year old girl who was abducted during the 2014 Sinjar massacre and tragically sold into sexual slavery by ISIS. I encourage everyone to learn about her courageous journey towards freedom and recovery.
Under the supervision of Thompson, the movie traces the challenges that Mediha encountered after her liberation from captivity, as she was transferred to a refugee camp for internally displaced individuals in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The actress claims she’s formed a special connection with the main topic of the documentary, though they haven’t met face-to-face as of now.
She clarified that it primarily focuses on handbags. What I thought I could contribute was essentially a comfortable, nurturing, secure environment with a touch of something special – some practical items she could carry along with her.
I arranged for her to receive a backpack, and we’ve been discussing its details extensively over time. In fact, this conversation has spanned many years. As a result, she now has a backpack filled with her school items, which is all taken care of.
She mentioned: We haven’t had a face-to-face encounter so far, as she couldn’t attend this (screening). However, that will change soon.
“I’ve got a special wish, and that is to introduce her to swimming. The scene in the movie that touched me deeply was when she wasn’t allowed to swim while her brothers did, which seemed unfair to me.
Apart from his current roles, Thompson is set to feature in the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Down Cemetery Road,” which is based on Mick Herron’s 2003 debut novel – the initial installment of a four-part series.
In a tranquil Oxford suburb, when a house unexpectedly blows up and a young girl vanishes amidst the chaos, Sarah Tucker – a discontented young wife (portrayed by Ruth Wilson), yearning for excitement in her mundane life – becomes consumed with locating her.
She enlists the help of private eye Zoë Boehm, who is played by Emma.
The synopsis for the upcoming series reads: ‘When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbour Sarah Tucker becomes obsessed with finding her – and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm.
Zoë and Sarah unexpectedly discover themselves entangled in an intricate web of deceit, uncovering secrets that suggest some presumed deceased individuals are actually alive, while many living people appear to be on a path towards death.
