Dakota Johnson reveals her biggest ‘red flag’ in men after Chris Martin split

Just four months after calling off her engagement to Chris Martin of Coldplay, Dakota Johnson shared what she considers the biggest warning sign in a potential partner.

The 36-year-old actress and the 48-year-old musician were together for eight years before publicly ending their relationship in June 2025.

In a recent YouTube interview with Vogue’s ‘Questions’ series, Johnson was asked about any potential ‘red flags’ in her life.

When asked about her biggest pet peeve, the Madame Web actress didn’t hesitate: ‘Men wearing flip-flops in public? It’s a dealbreaker.’

Martin might not have broken Johnson’s firm rule, but he’s known for often going without shoes in public.

Okay, so it’s just adorable how Dakota totally got into Ben’s thing about not wearing shoes! I mean, I was obsessed when the paparazzi caught them walking around barefoot back in 2019, and then again in 2022! It just proves how connected they were, you know? She really just got him, and I lived for those little glimpses into their life!

She began dating Martin in 2017, after he finalized his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow in 2015. Martin and Paltrow, who have two children together, were married for many years.

Martin and Johnson secretly got engaged several years later.

However, the Daily Mail reported in June that the couple had split up after being together for almost ten years.

According to a source who spoke to Daily Mail, the couple had actually been separated for quite a while, but hadn’t formally announced their split.

Dakota desperately wanted them to be a family, fueled by her deep love for him and his children.

The source explained that the split wasn’t immediate. They kept going through cycles of breaking up and getting back together. Sometimes, being apart while working actually helped, as distance made them appreciate each other more. However, each time they reunited, small issues would build up, ultimately revealing they weren’t a good long-term fit.

According to a Daily Mail source, Johnson was deeply upset about not being able to see Martin’s children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, as often, but she wants them to know she’ll always be supportive.

The source suggested that Martin and Johnson might get back together, but emphasized that some time apart would actually be beneficial for them if they hoped to have a future together.

The Daily Mail initially reported problems in the couple’s relationship in August 2024, but a spokesperson later stated they had resolved their issues and remained a couple.

There were rumors of a short breakup for the couple in 2019, reportedly because Martin wanted to start a family, but they reconciled quickly.

Johnson recently answered questions for Vogue while on location shooting the cover of Vogue Germany, which came out on Wednesday.

Although Johnson didn’t talk about her recent split from Martin during the interview, she did open up about what it was like growing up with famous parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

Despite recognizing the advantages of having famous parents, Johnson admitted growing up with celebrity parents was often frightening and bewildering for her.

She remembers feeling frightened as a child, recalling instances where people would aggressively approach and even physically try to reach her mother during simple outings like grocery shopping.

Growing up believing that kind of treatment is normal can create lasting emotional issues. And when you add being constantly in the public spotlight – with your personal life exposed invasively, rudely, and painfully – it makes things even harder.

With a family deeply rooted in filmmaking – his grandmother was actress Tippi Hedren and his stepfather is Antonio Banderas – Dakota Johnson was raised on movie sets and constantly around industry professionals.

The actress observed that her family’s work was unlike that of her classmates’ mothers, who typically had office jobs.

Growing up, it was tough making and maintaining friendships because our family traveled constantly. But I got used to it – it just felt like a natural part of our lives, something we were always meant to do.

Dakota Johnson started her acting career at age nine in the 1999 film Crazy in Alabama, which was directed by her stepfather, a Spanish filmmaker who was 65 at the time. She credits her mother, then 68, with helping her get the role.

‘But I wasn’t allowed to work properly until I graduated from high school,’ Dakota noted.

When she was 17, Taylor Johnson was chosen as Miss Golden Globe 2006, a role traditionally given to the children of famous people. As Miss Golden Globe, she presented awards to the winners and helped them off the stage.

It’s no surprise that Tippi Hedren’s daughter, Melanie Griffith, was chosen as Miss Golden Globe in 1975. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ended the tradition of having a Miss Golden Globe in 2022, replacing it with the title of ‘Golden Globe Ambassador’.

By the time she turned 18, Johnson leveraged her family’s well-known name to quickly secure a modeling contract with IMG in 2006. Two years later, she also signed with the William Morris Agency to pursue acting opportunities.

Johnson credits her mother, Griffith, with teaching her to feel comfortable and confident in her own skin, which ultimately allowed her to confidently wear daring outfits on the red carpet.

Johnson mentioned enjoying wearing flattering clothes, but also shared that lacking early encouragement from a key female role model – being told you’re perfect, intelligent, unique, resilient, and courageous – can be deeply damaging.

‘It’s hard to re-teach yourself that love later on. That was a huge gift she gave me.’
