Dakota Fanning‘s new horror movie has a very dark ending, but the actress believes there’s actually a message of hope hidden within it that viewers may not have noticed.
In a recent interview, Fanning explained the meaning of the film’s ending, where her character, Polly, continues to be haunted by those connected to the cursed box. She shared her interpretation: “I see it as a message about how much stronger we are than we realize. We often underestimate our own resilience and ability to overcome challenges. We may not want to face difficult times, but as humans, we’re capable of handling more than we think.”
I’ve been really struck by how resilient Polly is – she’s far stronger than she realizes, I think. And honestly, even within the typically tense world of a Bryan Bertino film, I feel a little bit of hope when I think about her story. It all starts when she receives this strange, cursed box from an older man, and that’s where things really begin to unfold.
According to the official description, a mysterious box asks Polly to put three items inside: something she needs, something she despises, and something she loves. The movie then shows how her life turns into a frightening supernatural ordeal, filled with scary visions and mental anguish, as she attempts to meet the box’s requests and stay alive.
Bertino has shared that the film is largely about the dynamics of an unhealthy relationship. He points out that a key feature of these relationships is constantly shifting expectations and rules. No matter how much someone tries to maintain stability, the rules will always change, creating a feeling of helplessness and the sense that success is impossible.
Fanning Has Another Anticipated Project in the Works
Even though the movie received a variety of reviews and didn’t score well on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s found success on streaming platforms. By October 19th, it had climbed to the number two spot on Paramount+. It also became the top movie in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, and Mexico. Currently, it’s ranked fifth in Canada and second in the United Kingdom.
Actress Kate Fanning will soon appear as Jenny in a new thriller based on Andrea Mara’s novel. The story centers around Marissa Irvine (Sarah Snook), who experiences every parent’s worst fear when she goes to pick up her son, Milo, from a playdate and discovers he’s missing. The film also stars Jake Lacy, Sophia Lillis, Michael Peña, and Abby Elliott.
All Her Fault premieres on Peacock on Nov. 6 Vicious is streaming on Paramount+
