Daisy Ridley reassures Star Wars fans about the future of her Rey movie

As a movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and trepidation regarding the ongoing saga of the Star Wars universe. The latest news about the Rey sequel has me scratching my head like Yoda trying to understand millennial slang.

Recently, we learned that a planned Star Wars sequel that would follow Rey (Daisy Ridley) after the events of her trilogy was going through some changes behind the scenes: Steven Knight, best known as the creator of the Netflix show Peaky Blinders, was leaving as the movie’s screenwriter. And this after celebrated writer Damon Lindelof was “asked to leave” the project a while back. Should we add this to the pile of Star Wars projects Disney has started up and then abandoned, alongside the never-made projects from the likes of Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss?

Indeed, actress Daisy Ridley is currently addressing some speculations gently; during an interview for her upcoming film titled “Magpie”, she clarified certain misconceptions. For example, there were whispers that the absence of director Rian Johnson means the Rey movie won’t make its Christmas 2026 release date. However, Ridley made it clear to The Playlist that no specific release date has been set yet.

Indeed, it’s accurate that Disney has marked December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027 for upcoming Star Wars films, but the specific titles have remained a mystery so far. Personally, I find myself unfazed by this latest announcement. As Ridley eloquently put it, “The creative process is a voyage that’s filled with discovery.” When everything is prepared and we’re ready to embark, we will set sail, and I must say, it’s exciting!

I’m really genuinely excited. And I have said I’m very excited, but I really do mean I’m excited about what’s coming. And I think we really have the luxury of making sure that this is the right.

As a film critic, I understand the fervor surrounding “Star Wars” movies, especially considering the numerous aborted projects in recent years. It’s plausible that during the short-lived tenure of CEO Bob Chapek, Disney may have greenlit multiple films impulsively without proper consideration for feasibility. However, with the return of former CEO Bob Iger late in 2022, they seem to have become more cautious about premature revelations. Therefore, it’s possible that the rumored Rey movie could be one such project still in development, gradually taking shape.

In the coming months, Disney plans to debut a fresh Star Wars movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which serves as a continuation of the television series. After wrapping up production, this sequel film is slated for release on May 22, 2026.
