Focus Features has announced that its new British period drama, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (known from Normal People) and Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), will be released in the UK soon. The film is based on Jane Austen’s beloved novel Sense and Sensibility and tells the story of the Dashwood sisters as they navigate life and try to secure their futures through marriage after their father passes away.
The new film adaptation, first announced in June, features Emma Mackey as Elinor, the oldest of the Dashwood sisters, and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne. Samantha Balfe plays their mother, Mrs. Dashwood, in the movie.

Prisca Shaw will play Mrs. Jennings, and Aoife Breathnach is confirmed as Margaret, one of the Dashwood sisters. Jack MacKay will play Edward Ferrers, who Elinor is in love with, and Tom Dillane will play John Willoughby, Marianne’s love interest. Leo Nordrum will star as Colonel Brandon.
The production company calls the new film Sense and Sensibility a fresh and timeless look at the classic story, highlighting its themes of both emotional control and intense feelings.
Ang Lee’s 1995 film adaptation of the novel featured Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood and Kate Winslet as her sister, Marianne. The cast also included Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant.
Caitríona Balfe, known for her role in Outlander, is preparing for the show’s eighth and last season, where she plays Claire Fraser in this Scottish time-travel romance.
The final season of Claire and Jamie’s beloved story will premiere on MGM+ in the UK on Saturday, March 7, 2026, promising a deeply emotional conclusion.
Season eight begins with Jamie and Claire returning to Fraser’s Ridge to find that the war has extended even to their home. Despite their absence, the settlement has become a successful and growing community.
After years apart and with new faces and shifting dynamics, the Frasers must decide how much they’re willing to give up for their home – and, crucially, how much they’ll sacrifice to remain a family.
Sense and Sensibility is released in cinemas on 25 September, 2026.
