Dafne Keen’s Teen Horror Movie ‘Whistle’ Snapped Up by IFC and Shudder for U.S. Release
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to share my thoughts on “Whistle,” the chilling new offering from director Corin Hardy, best known for his work on “The Nun.” This gripping horror film has recently been picked up by Independent Film Company (IFC Films) and Shudder.
In “Whistle,” you’ll find an impressive ensemble cast that includes Dafne Keen, known for her role in “Logan,” alongside Nick Frost, Sky Yang, Sophie Nélisse, and Percy Hynes White. While the release date is yet to be announced, it’s confirmed that this spine-tingling adventure will first grace the silver screen before making its way to Shudder, the exclusive home for all things horror. So, mark your calendars and get ready for a heart-pounding cinematic experience!
According to a report by Deadline, the horror film “Whistle” has been purchased for distribution in the U.S. by two key players in the genre, Shudder and IFC. Adam Koehler, who oversees acquisitions and productions for these three companies (Shudder, IFC, and RLJE Films), is thrilled about this deal to share “Whistle” with audiences.
Corin Hardy is a skilled artist in the realm of horror, and we’re thrilled to share his terrifying creation with viewers nationwide. In ‘Whistle’, he’s crafted a brutal and gory spectacle that promises to be one of the most chilling and fearsome horror films of recent years.
Hardy has always been familiar with the horror genre. His initial foray, the 2015 release titled “The Hallow“, was a chilling folk horror that garnered praise from critics and marked the beginning of his journey towards bigger projects in Hollywood. Subsequently, he caught the attention of Peter Safran and James Wan, who entrusted him with directing “The Nun“. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film resonated with audiences, becoming a hit that grossed $366 million at the box office and setting a new record as the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring series. Later, he directed several episodes of the action series “Gangs of London“, before moving on to “Whistle“. Hardy was clearly thrilled about securing the distribution deal and shared his enthusiasm publicly.
The movie, entitled “Whistle,” resonates deeply with me due to its raw, rebellious spirit reminiscent of my beloved genre films from my youth. The allure of the Death Whistle, shrouded in intriguing mythology, captivated me and offered a platform for crafting diverse, creative, and chilling deaths on screen. This production is tailor-made for the immersive cinema experience, so I eagerly anticipate audiences joining us as we blow the whistle together with IFC and Shudder in theaters!
Whistle is based on the screenplay by Owen Egerton, who drew inspiration from his own short story. The film was shot between 2023 and 2024, and since then, producers have been trying to find distributors. The official plot synopsis reads:
A band of unsuspecting teenagers from high school accidentally find an enchanted Aztec Death Whistle. They learn that when blown, the eerie noise it produces calls forth their impending demises, which stalk them relentlessly. As the number of casualties grows, the friends embark on a frantic quest to uncover the whistle’s dark history in an attempt to halt the grim sequence of events they have unintentionally triggered.
Shudder and IFC Films Lead the Way in Indie Horror
Companies such as A24 and NEON are highly respected for creating and distributing films that larger corporations often overlook. On the other hand, Shudder and IFC Films have made a name for themselves by discovering hidden gems in the horror genre, which might otherwise get lost amidst the bustle of film festivals. Movies like “The Ugly Stepsister“, “The Rule of Jenny Pen” and “Azrael” are recent examples of films that may have remained unseen by the public if not for the crucial backing of these companies, who continue to champion horror storytelling even without the extravagant budgets typically provided by major studios.
