Cynthia Erivo Reveals Deep Bond with Ariana Grande and the Power of Elphaba’s Representation

Cynthia Erivo has shared insights about her role as Elphaba in “Wicked” and explained that she believes Elphaba embodies the experiences of Black and LGBTQ+ individuals due to her unique, outsider identity.

In a recent interview for AnOther’s spring/summer edition, the actress, who is 38 years old, mentioned that the movie sparked discussions on racism and sexual orientation, as these topics were among the points she addressed when talking about the blockbuster film.

In the movie, Cynthia plays opposite Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande, and the two actresses have openly discussed the strong connection they developed during the filming of this two-part production.

Talking about portraying a character shunned by society, Cynthia remarked: ‘It felt like playing a green witch. Yet, it seems to them that they are witnessing numerous aspects of myself as well.’

Experiencing a profound grasp of the sensation when one doesn’t belong, knowing that unsettling feeling of yearning for acceptance yet never quite receiving it…

‘Experiencing the sensation of knowing your duty and having the courage to fulfill it, as well as understanding the feeling of possessing greater potential but being doubted by others about your capability to deliver on that promise.’

In my perspective, the emerald hue serves as a shelter for those often marginalized, much like an umbrella shielding its carrier from the rain. Indeed, this discussion encompasses the intricacies of racism, yet it extends far beyond that, embracing any individual who has been ostracized or labeled “other.” This discourse delves into matters of queerness as well, providing a platform for understanding and acceptance in our diverse world.

‘The emerald color distinguishes Elphaba from everyone else, making her truly unique and different. Given this, I believe there is an added sense of obligation because beneath that green, I am a black woman. Therefore, we can engage in a meaningful dialogue about the experiences of being a black woman when one feels unwelcome.’

Apart from this, Cynthia shared that she needs to distance herself from the characters she plays since she pours a significant part of herself into every role, showing genuine concern for their well-being.

In her own words, she admitted that it’s challenging for her not to infuse genuine pieces of herself into every character she portrays. She confessed that it’s hard for her not to invest deeply in the characters she plays.

It seems I’ve developed a habit of giving myself some distance after wrapping up projects, creating room for refreshment before diving back in.

I aim to dedicate myself completely to the next character I encounter, as I feel a strong emotional connection with all of them, making them beloved individuals in my mind.

Cynthia and Ariana have shared an exceptional, non-romantic bond this year, often referred to as a remarkable platonic love story. Their paths crossed following their casting.

Cynthia remarked: “It seems incredibly familiar, as if I’ve known her for ages. People might not understand this happens infrequently in the world of film production.

She mentioned that the relationship they shared was unique, saying, “It’s not common to forge such a bond. Certainly, friendships can form on set and acquaintances are made, but deep connections like this don’t occur frequently.

During the same period, Cynthia also participated in a striking fashion photoshoot, showcasing an array of unique outfits, one of which was reminiscent of Madonna’s cone bra corset.

In the realm of fashionable living, I too found myself captivated by an enchanting rose-print gown that I paired with a bold black chapeau, not forgetting to flaunt my iconic long fingernails.

Additionally, there were other styles on display, such as a flowing black gown with folds and a striped number paired with a wide-brimmed hat.
