Cyclops unleashes a massive optic blast as the X-Men reassemble for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

It’s official: The X-Men are making their big screen return in “Avengers: Doomsday.”

Marvel released its third trailer for the upcoming superhero event on Tuesday, focusing on the characters Magneto (played by Ian McKellen), Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and Cyclops (James Marsden). This trailer has been shown in movie theaters before screenings of Disney’s hit film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

The brief, serious trailer opens with a view of debris inside the ruins of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the X-Men’s headquarters. It also shows Xavier and Magneto in what looks like a heartfelt scene, and an upset Cyclops firing a powerful optic blast. In the background, large legs—possibly belonging to Sentinels—can be seen moving around.

The initial trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is out, and it officially shows Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers – and he now has a baby!

As Magneto narrates, “Death is inevitable—the only certainty in life.” He argues that the real question isn’t whether we’re ready to die, but what kind of person we will be at the very end.

The clip ends by announcing the X-Men will be in “Avengers: Doomsday,” then shows a countdown to the movie’s release. This countdown also appeared in earlier teasers for “Doomsday” that focused on Chris Evans’ Captain America and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

The upcoming movie will be the first time Ian McKellen and James Marsden appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before Disney bought Fox in 2019, the X-Men were the stars of their own series of films, which began with the 2000 movie “X-Men.”

Stewart previously played a version of the X-Men leader in the 2022 Marvel movie, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” He’s not the only X-Men character to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though. Hugh Jackman reprised his role as Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and Kelsey Grammer made a brief appearance as Beast in a scene after the credits of “The Marvels.”

Besides Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Beast, Nightcrawler (played by Alan Cumming), and Mystique (played by Rebecca Romijn) are also expected to be in “Doomsday.”

The upcoming movie “Doomsday,” directed by the Russo brothers who are known for their work on Marvel’s Avengers films, will star Robert Downey Jr. as the villain Doctor Doom. The film will bring together a large cast of familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. It will also feature the antiheroes from the “Thunderbolts*” team – Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, and Hannah John-Kamen – as well as the stars of the recent “Fantastic Four: First Steps” movie: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

“Avengers: Doomsday” will hit theaters Dec. 18.
