Cyberpunk 2 Release Date Isn’t Extremely Far From Us

Good news for fans of Cyberpunk! CD Projekt recently shared an update on the game’s development during an earnings call. They discussed plans for the team working on the sequel, which was first announced in 2022 under the code name “Project Orion.” While a specific release date wasn’t revealed, this signals progress is being made.

Cyberpunk 2 development update given by CD Projekt

CD Projekt Red is significantly expanding the team working on Cyberpunk 2, aiming for 300 developers by 2027. Currently, 135 developers are spread across offices in Boston, Vancouver, and Warsaw. This growth suggests the game won’t be released until at least 2028, with 2029 or 2030 being more likely release windows.

During the Q3 2025 earnings call, CD Projekt’s co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, announced that the company’s Boston studio, which was founded two years ago, now has 80 employees. A significant majority – over 90% – of these team members hold senior positions.

According to him, CD Projekt has successfully built a solid leadership team and is now concentrating on hiring people with some experience, but not necessarily a lot, to begin early work on a new project. He also mentioned plans to grow the Cyberpunk team in Boston, aiming to double its size over the next two years as the project moves forward.

Nowakowski also shared that CD Projekt intends to balance the workload more evenly between its studios in Boston, Vancouver, and Warsaw over the next few years, aiming for a 50/50 split. Both the Canadian and Polish teams are expected to expand as part of this change.

Nowalski explained that establishing the Boston team was key to the simultaneous development of two major games. He noted that while it added some logistical challenges, the team brought a diverse range of experience and skills. He’s confident this investment will ultimately elevate the next Cyberpunk game to a new standard.

Details about the story of Cyberpunk 2 are currently unavailable. However, Mike Pondsmith, who created the original Cyberpunk role-playing game that inspired Cyberpunk 2077, recently shared that the sequel will feature a new city. He described it as a dark and troubled version of Chicago.

Earlier this year, Video Games Chronicle reported that CD Projekt Red aimed to create the most lifelike and responsive crowd system ever seen in a video game. Also, a job listing for a lead network engineer suggested that the game would include multiplayer functionality, according to IGN.
