While many films find success, Obsession is something truly special. This low-budget horror movie has become a huge cultural phenomenon, much like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity before it. Made for an estimated $750,000 to $1 million, it’s now on track to earn over $100 million worldwide as its popularity continues to grow.
The film’s strong performance in ticket sales is really noteworthy. It’s a fantastic start for writer-director Curry Barker, potentially establishing him as a significant figure in horror – he may already be on his way, with several promising projects planned. This rise to prominence fits a recent Hollywood pattern: several former comedians, especially those who built an audience online, have successfully transitioned from making people laugh to scaring them.
YouTuber Curry Barker Went From Clicks to Flicks
Launched in 2005, YouTube quickly became one of the most visited video websites on the internet. Over the past two decades, it has launched the careers of many content creators. For Curry Barker, YouTube provided a great outlet for his creativity. Along with Cooper Tomlinson, his co-star and associate producer on Obsession, Barker created the comedy duo “That’s a Bad Idea,” which served as a valuable learning experience as he developed his skills as an actor and filmmaker.
I remember when Barker and Tomlinson first started out on YouTube – it was all silly sketches, like so many others. But they quickly found their niche by experimenting with horror, and it really resonated with people – they built up a dedicated following. Then, in 2024, Barker took a huge leap and directed his first feature film – a found-footage horror movie – with a ridiculously small budget of just $800! It was about an hour long and surprisingly, it got really positive reviews, a ton of press, and was an instant hit. It’s amazing what they managed to pull off!
This film was a true passion project. The filmmaker not only directed and starred in it, but also wrote, produced, and edited the entire feature, sharing cinematography responsibilities with their co-star, Tomlinson. The story is a harsh critique of online prank culture, centering around a troubled character called Milk (played by Barker) who documents increasingly erratic pranks on video.
Barker and Tomilson struggled to find a traditional distributor for their debut film. Ultimately, posting Milk & Serial on YouTube felt like they’d accepted it wasn’t going to get wider release. But it turned out to be a good move – not just because the film quickly became popular online, but because its critical and unsettling portrayal of YouTubers fit perfectly on the platform it was mocking. The film and YouTube were a natural pairing, like milk and cereal, and this success allowed Barker to gain the access he needed to create Obsession and move from being a popular online creator to a feature film horror director.
Curry Barker Is The Latest Comedian-Turned-Horror Filmmaker
Comedy and horror actually have a lot in common. Both rely on timing and building anticipation – a joke needs a punchline, and a scary moment needs suspense. It’s not surprising, then, that comedians are now finding success in the horror genre.
Jordan Peele is perhaps the best example of a comedian successfully transitioning to horror. After gaining fame on MADtv and as one half of Key & Peele, he launched his directorial career with the 2017 hit Get Out. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Peele an Oscar and establishing him as a celebrated director. He continued to develop his unique style with subsequent films like Us and Nope.
Zach Cregger was initially known for his work on the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know and the 2009 film Miss March, which didn’t receive much praise. However, he dramatically changed his career trajectory with the 2022 horror film Barbarian, proving his ability to surprise and innovate as a director and performer. He followed that success with another well-received film, Weapons, and is currently working on a new project scheduled for release on September 18th.
Curry Barker is now working with fellow Australian YouTubers Michael and Danny Philippou, who first gained popularity with their comedy channel, RackaRacka. The brothers then transitioned to horror filmmaking, achieving success with A24 films like Talk to Me and Bring Her Back. The Philippou brothers have proven that YouTubers can become successful horror directors, and it’s clear why Barker would want to follow a similar path to filmmaking.
It looks like Obsession is quickly becoming more successful than Barker’s previous films, Talk to Me and Bring Her Back. Current numbers suggest it could even earn more than both of those movies combined. This film marks Barker’s second feature and his first wide theatrical release. Despite already completing his next project, a Blumhouse horror called Anything But Ghosts, the incredible financial success of Obsession will likely create many new opportunities for Barker as a director known for thoughtful horror.
Movies Like Obsession Will Set Up the Next Generation of Horror Icons
Many of the horror movies mentioned here, while frightening, also have genuinely funny moments. For example, Get Out uses Lil Rel Howery’s character as comic relief. Barbarian gets some laughs from the misfortune of Justin Long’s character, a landlord who remains strangely upbeat. And even the more serious Obsession manages to find dark humor in its tragic love story.
With fewer and fewer traditional comedy shows and online humor having its limits, it’s no surprise that comedians are increasingly turning to horror. Curry Barker is just the newest example of a comic who’s found bigger success scaring audiences. And, as his film Obsession proves, he’s enjoying the rewards of that decision.
