Cuckoo finally hits theaters along with 3 other horror films and shows, Aug. 5

Well, as a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with over two decades of chasing ghosts in digital realms and surviving countless nights in my own living room, I can confidently say that August is shaping up to be an exhilarating month for us spooky souls!

It’s hard to believe August has arrived so swiftly; it feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Halloween! Fortunately for lovers of chills and thrills, this month brings several exciting new horror releases such as “Trap”, “Cuckoo” (which is part of the Alien series), and more. This week marks the long-awaited premiere of “Cuckoo”, featuring the talents of Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. Stevens has already proven himself in one of this year’s outstanding horror films, “Abigail“, so expectations for “Cuckoo” are sky high!

Although Cuckoo will undoubtedly rule in cinemas, options for home viewing are limited, as the significant new horror release available on demand is Steamboat Willie’s chilling production, The Mouse Trap. However, an engaging true crime documentary is set to premiere on Max, and fresh episodes of Evil continue to air Thursdays on Paramount+. There are only three episodes left in the series.

Cuckoo (Aug. 9, Theater)

Upcoming in cinemas is the latest horror movie from Neon, the distributor behind the blockbuster hit “Longlegs” last month. Featuring Dan Stevens, Hunter Schafer, and Jessica Henwick, the film “Cuckoo” opened with an impressive 82% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film titled “Cuckoo” has been garnering fantastic attention and praise following its debut at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival this year. A 17-year-old girl named Gretchen (Schafer) is compelled to move with her father to an Alpine resort. Strange occurrences surround their new dwelling, and it won’t be long before Gretchen unearths a gruesome family secret.

Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? (Aug. 8, Max)

The original Max documentary titled “Taken Together” delves into a chilling Iowa cold case known as the Evansdale Murders, which occurred in 2012 when two young girls, Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins, mysteriously disappeared and later were found murdered.

On July 13, 2012, Lyric and Elizabeth were spotted on a bike ride together, but their story took a heartbreaking turn later in the year when their bodies were found. The incident was classified as a double homicide. An upcoming documentary series, comprising of three parts, plans to delve into this unsolved mystery and appeal for anyone with relevant information to speak up.

The Mouse Trap (Aug. 6, VOD)

The initial horror movie, one among several in development using Disney IP now in public domain, is titled “The Mouse Trap“. This film, set in a carnival, follows a group of young adults as they are stalked by Steamboat Willie, an early version of Mickey Mouse who debuted in the 1928 short film with the same name. The trailer hints, “The mouse is loose.” I’m guessing it will offer a fun, low-budget slasher experience similar to “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey“.

Borderlands (Aug. 9, Theaters)

As a fervent admirer, let me share that Borderlands isn’t strictly a horror movie, but it carries the mark of renowned horror director Eli Roth (the mastermind behind Hostel and Thanksgiving).

In the spirit of the well-known video game series with the same title, “Borderlands” is an action movie set in a sci-fi universe that follows a group of misfits joining forces to search for a missing girl. Although it didn’t get much buzz initially, this film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including big names such as Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershon, and Ariana Greenblatt.
