The upcoming series Crystal Lake, a prequel to Friday the 13th, stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees. The show’s creator, Brad Caleb Kane, has hinted that it won’t be a typical slasher series like the Friday the 13th films, but promises plenty of violence – he says there will be “rivers of blood.” This is particularly surprising because the series won’t feature the infamous killer Jason Voorhees, leaving fans curious about who will be responsible for the bloodshed.
Kane revealed the update to Entertainment Weekly, as he noted:
The show feels like a psychological thriller, reminiscent of paranoid films from the 1970s. While it shares elements with slasher movies – including a lot of violence and clever, shocking deaths – it doesn’t quite fit into that genre. The violence isn’t gratuitous; it’s used to develop the characters, explore the show’s themes, and build a strong sense of setting and time period.
The show’s creator explained that he chose the prequel’s time period to set the overall mood, probably because it’s hard to keep a slasher series exciting for a long time on television.
When I started thinking about a prequel to the original Friday the 13th, I focused on the time it was made. The first movie really captured the feeling of the 1970s – a period defined by paranoia, distrust of authority, and the rise of the women’s liberation movement. I wanted to explore those themes in the prequel.
What Is ‘Crystal Lake’ About?

Paramount Pictures
Many people aren’t familiar with the original story of Friday the 13th. While Jason Voorhees, with his hockey mask, is the face of the series and known for attacking camp counselors, the first movie actually focused on his mother, Pamela Voorhees, seeking revenge on those who wanted to reopen the camp where Jason tragically drowned.
We don’t yet know the full story of Crystal Lake, except that it will show Pamela Voorhees’ life before the first film. This approach is similar to the Psycho prequel, Bates Motel, which focused on the difficult experiences of Norman Bates and his mother rather than just on Norman’s crimes.
Beyond hinting at a violent film, Kane also highly commended Cardellini’s acting, predicting she’ll be a standout. He said she’s going to impress audiences and believes she delivers an exceptionally strong performance, but didn’t want to reveal any more details.
Crystal Lake doesn’t yet have a release date.
