Crushing Boyzone documentary reveals why Mikey hasn’t talked to the rest of the band in over five years
The documentary titled “Sky’s Boyzone: No Matter What” now joins series such as “Dirty Pop” and “Boybands Forever,” delving beneath the glossy exterior of the ’90s and revealing the authentic tales of the pop stars’ journeys.
Skipping over the flashy, glamorous veneer of that time period, No Matter What appears to offer a raw, unfiltered account of the personal struggles endured by the five members of Boyzone – Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham, and the late Stephen Gately – who were once beloved pop stars.
The powerful and heartfelt documentary follows the path to stardom as seen through the eyes of the band members and their manager, Louis Walsh, whose influence played a crucial role in their ascent.
Through shared anger, determination, and pain, their bond endured the hardships they faced, such as the unfortunate death of Stephen and their contentious last tour in 2019 – except for Mikey, who chose to part ways.
In the documentary “Boyzone: No Matter What,” Ronan, Keith, and Shane were seen enjoying a round of laughter at a pub together. However, the camera then switched to Mikey, who was seen drinking solo in another (or possibly the same) pub at a different time. Mikey hinted that it would be challenging for him to meet up with them personally, as he emphasized his future as being more significant than his past.
So what happened to make him become so isolated from the band?
What happened between Mikey Graham and the rest of Boyzone?
The 2019 Boyzone tour “Thank You and Goodnight” marked a significant juncture where each member parted ways, yet none more profoundly than Mikey, who found it impossible to return to the status quo.
During the Tokyo stop on our tour, the situation became most strained as issues surrounding Keith and Shane’s conduct and work ethic surfaced.
Ronan observed that it was the most disappointing event they’d experienced throughout all their years together, given the unprofessional behavior of Keith and Shane during their performance, which he described as childish antics. Meanwhile, Mikey referred to this behavior as immature conduct.
Ronan, feeling frustrated due to exerting more effort than others, chose to take action against everyone.
As a devoted fan, I’d express it this way: Shane shared that Ronan felt we weren’t contributing as much as we should compared to him. However, Shane asserted that, being the lead singer, it was his job to shoulder a significant portion of the load. He pointed out that the rest of us didn’t have the same opportunities or responsibilities as him to contribute in the same capacity.
“It had reached a complete state of malignancy,” Mikey said reflectively, adding, “I’d had enough.”
On the subsequent evening, there was a disagreement between him and Keith, but the movie chooses not to disclose specifics about their encounter out of respect for their privacy.
In my own words, let me just say there were some harsh realities I encountered, and I prefer not to delve deeper into the specifics.
Despite harboring strained relationships among its members, the fractured group departed from Japan and eventually played their last five performances at the Palladium.
Ronan described the experience as “feeling like I was just going through the motions. It turned out to be an incredibly underwhelming event.
Mikey expressed his desire to leave, escaping a harmful atmosphere, before mentioning he hasn’t connected with the rest of the band since that particular evening.
“That’s when I began to understand that I need to make some changes,” he explained.
As a dedicated admirer, I must say, despite the profound scars and the hurricane of pain we’ve weathered together, Mikey seems unfazed by the bitter remnants.
He expressed his deep appreciation for everything he’s gone through, both the good and the difficult times, as they’ve shaped him into the person he is now.
Each day, music plays a role in my life, as if spring-stepping into each new morning. Before joining Boyzone, I was a lean, vibrant man, brimming with health, fitness, and self-assurance. That is the man who is coming back to life. There’s an overwhelming feeling of freedom that fills me now.
Although the former popstar prefers not to reminisce about the past, he maintains a warm affection for the guys who accompanied him on his journey to stardom.
He expressed his hope for their well-being throughout their lives, saying ‘I want only good things for them.’ He harbors no ill feelings or resentment. However, he doesn’t wish to revisit the painful emotions of the past that lingered for so long, as seeing them for too extended a period might trigger those memories. His future is precious to him, and he doesn’t want to spend it dwelling on the past.
Keith admitted that one thing he deeply regretted during that period was having frequent disagreements with Mikey, as they were remarkably similar in many ways.
I really felt the impact of the lost time between us, which I cannot regain as a person.”
“That missed time had a significant effect on me as a human being; however, it’s impossible to reclaim those years.
Apart from expressing remorse, Mikey added, “It didn’t need to end up like this,” indicating that their inability to comprehend each other caused the problem.
He maintains that the experience he had with Boyzone was more than worthwhile, as he sees it as an incredible journey filled with triumph and joyous moments which far surpass any hardships encountered.
Will Boyzone ever reunite?
In essence, the title “No Matter What” carried a sense of conclusiveness about the band’s future, but there were still glimmers of optimism and potential harmony for those who wished for a brighter, more cohesive conclusion.
When asked about the possibility of another reunion show Mikey gave a heavy sigh and replied:
“Well, now that’s a question.”
Regarding the performance itself, he expressed a desire to relive the moment. It’s something most people would appreciate, isn’t it? However, there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes as well.
Keith might be influenced more easily since he feels there’s a lot left for him to achieve personally, suggesting that he still finds value in continuing his journey.
It’s clear though that it is the bond they shared that remains paramount.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “In the documentary, I shared, the tunes, the set, the glow – those elements I could part ways with, but the friendships? Those are irreplaceable, they’re more than just a game.
Ronan echoed the same sentiment when he said “I couldn’t bear to lose any of the boys.”
