Crowded, Cramped, and Chaotic: The Reality of BGIS 2025

Story Highlights

  • Fans with tickets were made to sit on floor due to over-distribution in BGIS 2025 Grand Finals.
  • Competitive fan rivalries turned into violent clashes as brawls broke out with nobody to control.
  • Players received just ₹1000/day for food in a five-star hotel – some fell sick.

The Battlegrounds Mobile India Series (BGIS) has consistently been the premier esports event within the professional gaming scene for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) in India. The anticipated 2025 Grand Finals of BGIS were intended to add another jewel to the already impressive collection of BGMI’s enthusiastic fanbase and popularity. However, the actual experience differed significantly.

For an Indian esports hopeful, competing and triumphing at this annual event is undoubtedly a significant ambition due to its prestige and majesty. However, the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan in Kolkata did not live up to the anticipated grandeur.

In this piece, we’ll delve into the missteps that occurred and propose potential improvements for the BGIS 2025 esports competition to enhance its quality.

Over-distribution of tickets made the fans sit on the floor

Indeed, you’ve got that right! The excessive allocation or perhaps unnecessary selling of tickets filled up the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan on the last day of BGIS 2025 instantaneously.

200 people with tickets, some paid ₹500 each, but unfortunately, we weren’t allowed entry into the #BGIS2025 lan finale due to overcrowding. We were told to wait for half an hour, but there was no communication from the management regarding our inability to enter or any alternative arrangements.

With legitimate tickets in hand, numerous enthusiasts were unfortunately unable to gain entry. This leads me to wonder if KRAFTON India anticipated that the usual ticket sales wouldn’t fill the arena? I can’t say for certain.

Yet, eventually, some dissatisfied esports fans managed to gain entry, but at what expense? These fortunate individuals ended up having to watch and cheer for their preferred teams and players from the floor instead.

This situation once more brings up a question about KRAFTON India’s and the tournament organizers’ capacity to handle big events such as this one. It’s crucial to remember that the fans are the most significant investors in any title or esports community. To see them treated in this manner, even after purchasing tickets with actual money, is disheartening at best.

Was the BGIS Grand Final full of glitter but no gold

The accommodation for the finalists of BGIS was luxurious, situated in Kolkata’s largest five-star hotel. However, an unexpected detail emerged. According to reliable sources from GamingonPhone, the organizers provided each participant with just 1000 INR (approximately $12) per day for their food expenses.

Absolutely! It’s just 1000 rupees a day for all their meals at a hotel where no outside food is permitted. But here’s the twist: Some players got sick because they had to go out and eat less expensive food instead. Even 8bit Thug, a co-owner of SouL esports, voiced his worries about this situation during his Instagram live broadcast.

It’s quite evident that KRAFTON India and the tournament organizers have demonstrated a disappointing level of commitment and carelessness in regards to the health and safety of the players and support staff during this event. Sadly, it’s another instance where such disregard is deeply troubling.

Fans are taking the Battle Royale genre very seriously and literally

At offline LAN gatherings attended by audiences, it’s usual for fans to show their feelings. However, things took a turn for the worse when those emotions escalated into violence. Several videos on social media platforms depict followers from two distinct fan groups engaging in a physical fight, using chairs and various other items as weapons.

In such instances, it falls upon the event organizers and vigilant security teams to intervene effectively. However, in this specific situation, it seemed as though the guards were merely stationary and barely attempting to defuse the escalating problem.

This incident underscores the apparent shortcomings in KRAFTON’s leadership skills. Such occurrences could potentially tarnish Battle Grounds Mobile India’s (BGMI) reputation significantly. Moreover, it might generate a negative sentiment among spectators, parents of budding players, and even the general public, raising concerns about the safety within the stadium where the final event is being held. Is the venue where the final game is taking place secure for all participants?

Conclusion

The BGIS 2025 Grand Finals held the potential to become a noteworthy LAN tournament in Indian esports, with Kolkata as its backdrop, a city steeped in history. The elite 16 teams of the nation were ready for an intense battle. However, what should have been an unforgettable event was marred by subpar planning, insufficient facilities, and crowd control issues.

It’s unfortunate that things didn’t turn out as planned. Not just the large prize pool and vast viewership, but also the offline experience and the well-being of those participating are crucial. If KRAFTON wants to foster esports growth in India, these concerns can no longer be ignored.
