Crocodile Dundee star more than 90 years old dies
As a devoted fan of the Australian cinematic legacy, I can hardly contain my sorrow upon hearing the news of Burt’s passing. This iconic saltwater crocodile, who graced our screens in the timeless classic Crocodile Dundee, was more than just a movie star – he was an ambassador for the raw, untamed spirit of Australia’s rugged natural beauty and awe-inspiring wildlife.
An iconic star in the 1986 blockbuster Crocodile Dundee has died.
In a tragic turn of events, the colossal, 700-kilogram crocodile character from the comedic adventure movie, standing tall at 5.1 meters, passed away while being held in captivity in Darwin.
He was ‘estimated to be over 90 years old’.
At Crocosaurus Cove, a place that houses both crocodiles and aquatic creatures, where Burt had been held in captivity since 2008, they declared his passing on Monday.
In a heartfelt post on our Facebook page, I share the profound sorrow we all feel at the loss of Burt, the legendary Saltwater crocodile who graced our screens as the beloved co-star in the timeless Australian classic, Crocodile Dundee. His memorable presence will be deeply missed.
Burt sadly died this past weekend, believed to have been more than ninety years old. This signifies the conclusion of a truly remarkable time in our lives.
Later, the admiration wrote an emotional homage for the legendary lizard, becoming widely recognized as one of the world’s most identifiable crocodiles.
The account of Burt’s life is filled with fortitude, adaptability, and a spirit that mirrors the audacity of the Northern Territory itself, they noted further.
In the ’80s, Burt was caught near Reynolds River. He became globally renowned, making appearances in Crocodile Dundee and significantly contributing to Australia’s reputation as a land teeming with raw natural splendor and breathtaking wildlife.
In the year 2008, Burt traveled to Crocosaurus Cove, transforming into a passionate and captivating advocate for crocodile education. Renowned for his self-reliant personality, Burt was unattached – a fact he openly displayed during his earlier years at a crocodile farm.
‘His fiery temperament earned him the respect of his caretakers and visitors alike, as he embodied the raw and untamed spirit of the saltwater crocodile.’
They added: ‘Burt stood out as unique. He wasn’t simply a crocodile; he embodied the raw power and grandeur of such remarkable animals, serving as a testament to their strength and magnificence.’
Though his character might sometimes prove difficult, it was exactly this unique quality that made him unforgettable and adored by those who interacted with him, as well as the multitude who visited him throughout the years. People from all corners of the world were captivated by his immense stature and awe-inspiring presence, particularly during feeding times.
At Crocosaurus Cove, we’re grateful to each one of you who came to honor Burt and share in celebrating his extraordinary life. In remembering him, we’re reminded of the significant part wild animals play in our collective past and the need to protect them for the generations to come.
Crocosaurus Cove plans to honour Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign at the attraction.
Marie-Clare Boothby, the Minister for Parks and Wildlife, conveyed her sorrow upon hearing about Burt’s demise during a press briefing held on Monday.
‘[Burt was] a true icon of the Territory, obviously featuring in Crocodile Dundee,’ she said.
It’s deeply unfortunate to learn… I believe people from all over the Territory are experiencing a sense of sadness about this.
2015 saw Burt gaining attention following an incident where two intoxicated youths trespassed into his habitat to provoke the animal.
A group of teens, who were deemed slightly intoxicated by the authorities, clandestinely entered Crocosaurus Cove and provoked the massive crocodile.
At around 4 in the morning, I received a call from our diligent security guard. He, truly a blessing with his quick thinking, pursued the situation and luckily, the two individuals involved decided to leave the scene. This is what Superintendent Del Jones shared, as reported by Nine News.
Prior to being startled by the guard, the duo had carelessly tossed items into the crocodile pen, such as a warning sign for wet floors and a pink float, which the massive 700kg creature quickly and contemptuously devoured.
‘Burt didn’t like that, he destroyed it,’ Superintendent Jones said.
In the initial Crocodile Dundee film, Burt worked together with Hogan and Linda Kozlowski. Additionally, he served as the inspiration for the computer-generated crocodile in the 2007 movie, Rogue.
