“Creepy” and “suspenseful” ‘90s-set crime drama that has fans divided gets new UK streaming home

A spinoff series to an acclaimed 1990s thriller has found a new streaming home in the UK.

The TV series Clarice, featuring Rebecca Breeds as the FBI agent originally portrayed by Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs, is now available to stream on Prime Video in the UK.

The series, created by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, draws inspiration from Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel, The Silence of the Lambs. It takes place in the timeline between the 1991 film of the same name, directed by Jonathan Demme, and its sequel, Hannibal, released in 2001.

The TV show Clarice first aired in February 2021 but was canceled after just one season. The cast includes Rebecca Breeds, along with Lucca De Oliveira, Devyn A Tyler, Kal Penn, Nick Sandow, Michael Cudlitz, and Marnee Carpenter.

The series didn’t last long and received a mixed reaction from critics, currently holding a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reviews for the series Clarice are mixed. IGN Movies enjoyed it, calling it creepy, suspenseful, and well-made, while USA Today criticized it as a poor imitation that doesn’t do justice to the original story.

Many viewers found it strange that the show limited the engaging character of Clarice by focusing so much on typical police investigations.

According to The Mary Sue, the show’s serious and complex topics don’t quite fit with the typical format of a CBS crime drama, and as a result, they feel somewhat disjointed and awkwardly presented.

The San Francisco Chronicle pointed out that with so many crime shows and strong female leads already on TV, Clarice doesn’t feel particularly original – it seems more like a late addition to an existing trend.

IMDb viewers had mixed reactions to Clarice. Some enjoyed it and thought it showed promise, while others found it dull and disappointing.

The film The Silence of the Lambs features Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant but dangerous cannibalistic serial killer and psychiatrist. He assists Clarice Starling (played by Jodie Foster) as she tries to track down another murderer, Buffalo Bill (played by Ted Levine).

The 1991 film is the only horror movie to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture, but that could change soon if Ryan Coogler’s Sinners wins the award as well.

Clarice is streaming on Prime Video in the UK.

The latest issue of Living Legends magazine is now available, and it’s a special tribute to Dolly Parton! You can find “Dolly at 80” in shops or order it online for only £8.99.
